Pray, Fast, Give, By Paula White's Control Money
The second part of the analysis will go in depth about the semiotic tools used by Paula White in her video Pray, Fast, Give and by Dr. Creflo Dollar in his video Control Money, don‘t let it Control You.
The two preachers in this comparison come off as very different, and so do their messages. By looking at the titles of the two videos, one can say that Dollar‘s message is much more explicit and straight forward than White‘s. Also, both titles show an order – an imperative statement, pushing the listener to proceed with certain actions.
Dollar and White are appearing in very different settings in these two videos. Dollar is preaching in the Living World Christian Center in Minnesota, which is a church of about 10,000 members. It is laid out

I’m gonna talk to you about understanding how to remain free from the spirit of mammon” (Dollar 00:39) and “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (White 3:21). These two preachers, as well as those analyzed above, all use the same chapter to illustrate a message of prosperity. At the same time, the preachers, Paula White and Creflo Dollar, use different semiotic tools to express their message more clearly. For example, White uses slides with written-out bible quotes and definitions of words, during which the slide takes up the whole screen and White cannot be seen at all. Meanwhile, Dollar is in front of a live audience and all of his gestures can be seen. White’s use of slides continually reminds the audience of what the message is about through the use of text and images. Through the whole video, White looks to the camera, while talking about the subject freely, but as soon as she begins reading from the Bible, she loses eye contact, however, the audience does not see that because a slide is put on the screen where the Bible verse is written …show more content…
As mentioned, Paula White uses slides to provide more clarity in her speech, but her situation is also very different from all other videos we are analyzing because she does not have a live audience. Therefore, to create interaction, she chooses to use slides. Moreover, when the slides are not showed on the screen, Paula White interacts with audience with gestures, which explains what she wants to say, for instance, while she refers to God or to God’s kingdom, she often raises her eyes towards the sky, where people imagine heaven to be. The image on the right shows White’s gesture during her words “You want your heart to be in the kingdom of God” (White 10:16). She also uses other hand gestures to illustrate what she is saying. For example, in the images below, she points to her ears when she says “I could hear clearly” (White 22:27) and towards the end of the phrase, she also points to the sky, again, illustrating that what she is hearing is coming from above, assumingly from God. This type of gesture is called a repeating gesture, meaning that the gesture is reiterating the exact words the speaker is saying (Rummage

He also used a PowerPoint presentation. This PowerPoint presentation did not have the entire sermon written out, but included some of the key bible passages, a few pictures, and the lyrics to the songs for the audience to follow along with. The slide backgrounds used pale blues and whites, with large, dark, black fonts in all caps that were easy for the audience to read, even from the back pew of the church. Each member of the audience was given a handout, which outlined the order of events that were to follow in the service, listed the bible verses and hymns, announced important events, wrote out specific prayers, and gave contact information for Pastor Dave Galbraith and other members of the church. He did a good job with utilizing the space of the stage, and walked around to utilize the space and be seen by all of the church-goers, rather than standing behind the podium. His hand gestures and facial expressions were pleasant and natural, which helped emphasize his points. They were not distracting from the overall message, but helped promote praise.…
