Port Fairy
PORT FAIRY – THE MOST LIVABLE TOWN IN THE WORLD

I live in Port Fairy which is in South West Victoria. As a mother of four I find it extremely relevant and desirable to bring my children up in a fun and carefree environment. What better place to raise children than ‘The most livable city with a population of under 20,000’. (The Standard Newspaper, May 2011). Port Fairy won this prestigious International Livcom Awards that were held in the United Arab Emirates. With members of the local council, Port Fairy was spruced for its port, beaches which there are three main beaches and the iconic bluestone cottages which all the bluestone was locally sourced and hand pitched that have stood the test of time. It was judged for strategic planning, environmental practices, healthy lifestyle and heritage. Sadly, though it was the only Australian Contender for the awards according the extremely proud article by the local newspaper, The Standard.

I have used the following sources to expand by knowledge: * http://www.standard.net.au/story/1149695/port-fairy-the-best-little-town-in-the-world/

Today Port Fairy is a stunning historic coastal village on the south west coast of Australia approximately 250 kilometer’s, depending on where you get your information from. Wikipedia states 293 klm’s from Victoria’s capital city, Melbourne, but www.localstats.apzm.com.au states 248 klm’s.

It has a current population of 3094 residents (Census 2011) and the median/average age of Port Farians (as they like to be known as) is 48 years old which is 11 years above the Australian average according to Port Fairy Demographics which I found very interesting and I wanted so much more information.

Furthermore, almost 50 percent of our 22 million people were either born overseas, or had one or both parents born overseas. The tangible effects of Australia having this incredible multi-cultural society are obvious. On a daily basis we are reminded of the unquestionable benefits that flow from the rich ethnic blend that now makes up our society. It is undeniable that the linguistic, cultural and social connections that come from being a multicultural society provide vast economic benefits and support the development of prosperous international business links. Also, one need only look at the incredible diversity in cuisine we enjoy, the range of furnishings from other countries with which we decorate our homes, and even the different customs many of us weave into our own lives, to see the vibrant impact that such rich ethnic diversity has on all of our lives. On the whole Australians are tolerant of these different cultural influences, in fact most of us embrace them willingly and enjoy the…

This alone can lead to an even more so car-dependent culture that presents a number of negative environmental impacts. Areas such as Helensvale and Coomera that offer low-density housing are not in proximity to the rail stations and the majority of employment on the Gold Coast is in places near Surfers Paradise leading to the fostering of a car-dependent culture. To manage its ever growing populations, the city of the Gold Coast should consider initiatives such as urban consolidation. The revitalisation of pre-existing buildings into higher-density housing could help minimise urban…

    Australian Stereotypes

Australia itself is culpable. Tourism Australia has tried to boost their tourism industries by commercializing Australians with a fresh and rejuvenating look such as the stereotypical “beach and bimbos” image popularised in the 1980s. However, the portrayal that Aussies loves hang out at the beach every day and ‘put another shrimp on the barbecue’ (or barbie, in the Australian slang) apparently bears a scanty resemblance with the reality. Nick Bryant, a Sydney correspondent also suggested that the popularity of…

Australia is one of the greatest nations known to man and that is why we all gathered here once a year, to rejoice in our flourishing nation. Without a doubt, Australia as we know it is the ‘lucky country’ and this fortune does not just come from our natural resources. The expression has been used to describe our weather, our way of life and our heritage. However, it is not just our blue skies and golden beaches that define us as the lucky country. The phrase also often describes our ability to give everyone a fair go. Furthermore, freedom of speech, expression and the values of egalitarianism are the foundations on which our identity is formed. Our identity is a reflection of all that is good in everyone – it has a changeable expressive human…
