STATE OF THE NATION ADDRESS 2015: A SYNOPSIS, CRITICAL ANALYSIS and REACTION By: Ma. Luisa Quilla Rendado

The Fifth State of the Nation Address, SONA 2014, was successfully delivered on Monday, July 28, 2014, at the Batasang Pambansa Complex in Quezon City. The President's second to the last SONA marked his fourth year in presidency, earning several rounds of applause from Senators, Congressmen, government officials, local and international media and few celebrities in the country. This year's SONA had no published theme, but the remarkable message he mentioned at the end of his speech was, as we quoted from the slain senator Ninoy Aquino, “The Filipino is worth dying for.”, “The Filipino is worth living for living for.”, "and The Filipino is definitely worth fighting for."
In His Excellency’s speech, PNoy discussed matters about our country’s economy, defenses, public works, education, etc. He also presented his achievements and outlined his priorities for this year and presented videos to prove his assertions.
PNoy began his speech by mentioning the controversial Disbursement Accelaration Program (DAP) which was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. He acknowledged the benefits of the mechanism which helped 220,000 students of Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) to the tune of P1.6 billion DAP funds. He then showed two video testimonials of those who benefitted from TESDA scholarships.
His speech was very inclusive—comprising of his accomplishments of his four years of administration in political as well as economic aspects and praises for public servants and government agencies and departments for the job well done. The address also enumerated the achievements of his administration over the past year, which includes good economic performance, increased budget in infrastructure, success of Public-Private Partnerships, calamity efforts, among

Throughout his speech he gave a lot of credibility to past experiences he had in his life. He reached out to the crowd, mostly those in school, by connecting what he went through in school with today’s youth’s same troubles and issues. He made personal connections with his audience which is very effective when one is connecting to the crowd in his or her speech. By using examples from the stories of what he went through as a child and a teen in school, his topic became more personable and more alive to the audience. The crowd could relate to what the President was saying because they too have or is going through what he is saying. He addressed the audience’s needs concerns and interests. He used audience analysis and based his speech around his audience. He concluded with telling the youth that we each have to work hard and reach for our dreams and helps others do the same. That if we keep doing our part, working hard to get an education we would achieve our dreams.…

For 2013 address, the president stated his plans starting with reducing the U.S deficit and debt. However, he emphasizes that the reduction of deficit alone is not an economic plan. Therefore, the president recommended that it will be made by getting rid of tax loopholes and deductions for the well-off and well-connected. Also, it will be done through cutting the same amount from Medicare as suggested in the Simpson-Bowles Report. Second, the president stated that our priority is making America a magnet for new jobs and manufacturing. He asked the congress to help create fifteen new public-private partnerships for manufacturing innovation and technology. President Obama also guaranteed that the next revolution in manufacturing will be made in America. Third, the president proposes for alternative energy. He suggested that we should use some of our oil and gas revenues to fund an Energy Security Trust that will drive new research and technology to shift our cars and trucks off oil for good. Also, the president will keep on speeding up new oil and gas permits. Fourth, President Obama talked about the immigration reform. He proposed putting more boots on the southern border than at any time in our history, and reducing illegal crossings to their lowest levels in 40 years which has something to do with stronger boarder security, and background check. President Trump’s State of the Union address was presented with a new take on law restrictions, graceful improvements in US infrastructure, as well as a significant rivalry against opposing nations. President Trump proves his nationalism and the power of his country’s patriots through acknowledging heroes like Officer Leppert (who helped out during Hurricane Harvey), Preston Sharp (boy who stood up for veteran respect), and Justin Peck (saved people from a terrorist bombing), in the efforts to show his country that he supports all corners of our nation, while lowering unemployment for certain races, supporting veteran cause, and changing economic rates to provide welfare for everyone of the US, no matter what situation they are in.
