Physics Lab : Motion of Cars
Motion of the Cars In this part of the experiment, we are trying to figure out how fast each of the cars are moving using our own measurements. We are also asked to make a mathematical equation that describes the motion. What we plan to do is use 2 meter long meter stick to measure the distance of the cars and record the position at each time interval. After that an average velocity can be found. After we used the average velocity, we were able to put it into the equation of a line formula and form an equation to describe each of the cars motions.

Now one of the biggest things that we noticed within the experiment, there was a lot of possibilities for errors. One of the biggest things that we had to overcome was the coordination between ourselves. We had to figure out a timing and coordination between the timer and the person starting the car and also the person who was placing the sugar packets. We practiced many times to minimize the human error. We also recoded the time and position using the front wheel of the car, so whenever the timer would pass a second, we would place the sugar pack where the front wheel was every time. So there was no misrepresentation of the data. Another thing we did was before the car was set on the table we had it running so that when the time started, the car would just move from exactly where it was placed and we wouldn’t have to worry about the start up

    In order for this equipment to assist one in measuring the speed of sound, the speaker and microphone are positioned inside the hollow tube with the speaker stationary at one end.     With the scientific method activity I went, with the car experiment. I had to experiment my concepts before, I can found the correct problem. Regularly the first thought that comes to a mind, when my car will not start up for the reason of the battery. I have experimented with, the battery first and that was not the issue. I came to the conclusion that it might be an electrical issue, so I switch the spark plugs. It was not the spark plug also. Then I decided to observe the fuses, which it became apparent that it was the issue. Thinking well I use the steps, for scientific method by experimenting all of my concepts and making a conclusion. The first thing that I had to figure out which issue that I thought the car was a having. I had to experiment every concepts to see, which issue was not making the car start. When I figured out, which problem it was the car could have been fixed. It has been so many occasions that I could have use the scientific method, to obtain the issue but regrettably I did not. I do obtain large amount of car problems. I have gone through an estimate amount, of three cars in the last three years for the reason I did not have any knowledge of what was the problem with them. I could have created some ideas, and then experimented with them. I might have tried to save, the car before I fully lost the car. For the future when I obtain car issues, I would try to use the scientific method to solve the problem before it turns out worst. First thing I would do is making, an inspection about the problem.     This lab is prone to some mechanical and human error. First, the meter stick and timer method. This method is the least accurate because it is the most subject to human error. While doing this method, one person must time the car as it moves a distance of one meter. This can be very inaccurate because the timer could start the timer to early or to late and could stop the timer to early or to late. Next we have the Spark Timer. This method uses special tapes and burns small holes into the tape every tenth of a second. The Spark Timer is very accurate and the timing is very precise. Our third trial was the Photogate. I believe that this device is the most accurate because it measures the speed at which a flag placed on top of the buggy passes through a infrared beam, breaking the beam. The final trial was the motion sensor. Although this device is accurate it is subject to human error. This error comes into play when the person is starting and stopping the buggy in the motion sensor. The error is that you cannot be sure if the motion sensor is hitting the buggy at all times, effecting the data.
