PHILIPPINES (FILIPINO) CULTURAL AND FOLK DANCES PHILIPPINES (FILIPINO) CULTURAL AND FOLK DANCES
INTRODUCTION AND DANCES
Countries in the world have their own cultures made more colorful, beautiful and vibrant because of Folk Dances that are reflection of who they are. In the east, the Chinese have their symbolic Dragon Dance, the Japanese have the ancestral dance Bon Odori. In the west the Americans have their Square Dance. On the other hand, the Philippines will not be left behind. "The Pearl of The Orient" boast of a varitey of Filipino Folk Dances.

The Philippines consist of 7107 islands, and is broken down in three groups of islands. The Luzon, Mindano, and Visayas. Each of these regions contain different languages,history, regligon, and traditions. With each region having different influence in thier arts, crafts, and ancestorical dances. Lets take a trip through each region and explore the different styles, costumes, Dances and Talents from Each Region.... As we explore each of the regions and styles, please remember alot of these Cultural and Folk dances represents hardships and daily back breaking tasks, that has turned into a art form. Many of the dances you will read about here were actuall activities or chores that the Filipino endured to survive the poor economy and state of the nation.....

LUZON -- Consisting of the tribes such as Ifugao, Benquet, Kalinga, Bontoc, Apayo, Kalinga, sometimes these are call Igorot. " But sometimes that is considered degrading ." Cordillerea name also used for some parts the Luzon Region...
Northern most region of the Philippines, Luzon gets its Cultural influence from Hindu-Buddist, Spanish and many ethnic regilous tribes. All with differences and beliefs. But in all the Cultural and Folk Dances from this region represents all different factions in one way or the other.

    This paper compares the Philippines and the United States in multiple areas such as norms, values, beliefs, religion, economics, etc. The United States and the Philippines, compared from a sociological perspective, reveal fascinating similarities and differences.     One distinct characteristic of traditional arts of the Filipino is that it is communal. Traditional arts represented different views of the member of community and their cultural and social beliefs. Some examples were the rice god bulol of the Ifugaos and the t’nalak of the T’bolis. Contemporary realities have affected our traditional arts through time. When American colonizers brought secular art, commercialism became the central focus of art. Traditional arts were still preserved in some areas especially in the rural areas but secular art was patronized in urban areas because this is where advertisements and commercial arts expanded. Traditional art was affected by the emergence of commercial art even if it was the rural societies who nurtured it. The repetitive and rhythmic weaving designs were used for commercialization and tourism. The carving designs of our traditional ancestors were also used to attract tourists. These art forms have a specific (spiritual) purpose for a tribal group or community but as the contemporary realities emerged, the essence of these art forms vanished. Modernism brought new art styles in the country during the 19th century. Even though new art forms were introduced by Filipino artists who mostly studied in Europe, traditional arts didn’t really disappear but it was also strongly influenced by modern art. As time went by, people explored more to adapt to their surroundings. Digital technology (computers and other gadgets) became a big factor to development of art. People patronized digital art than indigenous art. Indigenous art were also easily manipulated using digital technology. Tourism used indigenous arts to attract foreigners to visit our country. The folk dance of cordilleran region helps us discover the way of life of the cordilleran people through their clothing themes about nature, family life, and work in the fields as well as the spiritual matters. Cordilleran music is distinctively made up of two sound characteristics of instruments based on their respective materials the first, made of bamboo like flutes, percussion instrument and the second, made of metal like gongs. Second they presented about the Spanish dance influences these are the Putungan, Jota pe paragay, Aray,Habanera jovencita, Lanceros de tayala. You can see in the dance that the Spanish really influence the Philippines, Spain brought with them all aspects of their culture to the Islands. This includes the Catholic faith, clothing, and dance. The barong tagalog and the terno are Philippine interpretations of Spanish dress made to fit the humid climate of the Philippines.Third they presented about the dance of muslim suite. They presented Kinakulangan, Pig-apir,Vinta, Asik, Singkil. The Muslims in the Philippines were able to resist Spanish conquest. They preserved the Islamic lifestyle that differs from the majority of the Philippine population. The dances are characterized by vivid colors and rhythmic movements which reflect the influence of Arabian and Indo-Malaysian cultures.
