You're tired; you're hungry. You've just spent a long day at College Library and you can't wait to get back to your room. Glancing outside, you remember how quickly it becomes dark. You don't think much of it, though, as you bundle up and head out into the gusty wind. Not until you spy the shadows on the sidewalk or hear the leaves rustling beside you do you wish you weren't alone. You walk quickly, trying to stop your imagination from thinking of murderers and rapists. Only when you are safely inside your room do you relax and try to stop your heart from pounding out of your chest.

Can you remember a time when you felt this way? I would be surprised if you never have. The FBI reported last year that there were three murders, approximately 430 aggravated assaults, 1,400 burglaries, and 80 rapes here in Madison alone. And while these statistics are

Although there are many ways of dealing with crime, I recommend that you and every college student enroll in a self-defense course. You can choose from a variety of self-defense courses offered right here in Madison. You can find one to fit your schedule and your pocketbook. On campus, the university has a club sport called Shorin Ryu Karate, which emphasizes practical self-defense. They hold their meetings in the evening, after classes, right on campus, and they're open to all university students, faculty, and staff.

Another option is Villari's Self-Defense and Tai Chi Center, which not only offers courses in self-defense, but in tai chi, karate, and kung fu. Villari's location on State Street is convenient for all university students. To find a class that fits your needs, you can also search over the Internet or through the Yellow Pages. I also brought along some brochures today, so if you are interested, please see me after

When signing up to be an organ donor you usually think only your major organs will be used; however, something as small as a ligament of yours is used in popular surgeries such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructions. When someone tears their ACL they usually have a choice to have an autograft, or use one of their own ligaments, but they can also choose to have an allograft, or take a cadaver’s ligament to repair it. Each has it’s advantages and disadvantages, but I personally think that the better option is the allograft because I think the advantages are better than using your own ligament from another part of your body. The advantages consist of faster operative time, less post-operative pain, and a faster recovery time.…

Imagine that you trained all your life for that special moment of playing in your first NHL game. At the beginning of your first shift in the game suddenly another player’s stick comes up and strikes you in the eye. This incident ends your career. This could have been prevented if you wore a visor. I think visors should be mandatory in the NHL in order to improve a player’s safety. Statistics have proven players who wear visors in the NHL play less aggressive. There are many incidents involving sticks and pucks going into player’s faces. A recent incident occurred between Philadelphia’s Chris Pronger and Toronto’s Mikhail Grabovski. Furthermore, two years ago a former NHL player Brad May, Gave a speech supporting the use of visors.…

The Not Alone project, proposed by President Obama and Vice President Biden attempts to “break the silence about sexual violence on college campuses and reach out to provide victims with the supports and avenues they need to reclaim justice, security and a sense of well-being after an attack”(Nesbit, 2015). While many universities have adopted some of these strategies, Lock Haven University has employed multiple measures to prevent such crimes on its campuses. LHU’s H.O.P.E center supports, empowers, and enlightens students as well as staff on information and prevention tips. The Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) System is a program for self-defense tactics and technique courses for women which is designed to increase awareness, prevention, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. The LHU Public Safety Department has adopted the LHU Sexual Assault Response Guarantee, which assures victim rights, dignity, and privacy. LHU has an aggressive campaign to educate the students about consent and their rights when it comes to sexual activities, but whether the message is getting though, still seems to be in…

PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a psychiatric disorder that can occur following the experience or witnessing of life-threatening events such as the military combat, natural disasters, terrorism incidents, or any major tragedy. This is common in the life of veterans and is the leading cause of suicide among veterans. A VA patient who survived in Baghdad shares his experience with PTSD and explains how he knew he had this disability. Many veterans speak out about this issue and describe their continuous anger, alcohol addiction, and constantly wanted to fight. They usually feel very isolated and distant from their loved ones. One patient states, “PTSD involves rocketing into extreme states of stress re-activity; in the form of terror, rage, and uncontrollable impulses, and plunging into equally extreme states of being shut-down—exhaustion, emotional numbing, despair, and dissociation”. PTSD is about having fear and anxiety, allowing veterans to rage with anger and different emotion. There are many factors to PTSD, which affects others in different ways; or example, using video games to keep them occupied, spending money due to the lack of impulse control because of changes in their brain, and even not obtaining another job.…

Attention Getter: I would like to start my presentation off by telling you all to ask yourselves a series of fairly straight forward questions. I want you to take a look at you’re, any hand and ask your selves “Who’s hand is this?” Do the same with your other hand, and now both legs and your arms if you would like. If I am not mistaking the answer to all your questions are mine right. They are your hands, legs, and arms. What I am trying to get through to you all today is that your body is your body and that a person should be able to profit of his or her own body if done in a safe and controlled way.…

Self defense and personal protection products offer an inexpensive and effective means of safety when college students are subject to the cruelties of criminals. Safety tips and protection devices are usually the furthest thought from both young and older students but should never be overlooked. Personal protection and safety devices should be added to every student's "back to school" list of supplies. It only takes one assailant and one unequipped student to impact many lives, for many…
