A. Introduction
1. Earth Hour is the world’s largest sustainability movement, held on the last Saturday of every March. By asking people to switch off their lights for an hour, it allows individuals across the globe to take a united stand against climate change. And that’s exactly what 1.8 billion people in 135 countries did this year.
2. From the Eiffel Tower in Paris to the Empire State Building in New York City, the world’s tallest building the Burj Khalifa in Dubai to Petronas Twin Tower in Kuala Lumpur, the most visually captivating icons will go dark for Earth Hour.

I. What is the impact of Earth Hour?
1. Many people was wondering, and has the thought that switching off all the lights in one hour does not help much to the earth.
2. Yet, the truth is, in this one hour, energy consumption all over the world has greatly reduced.
3. While WWF stated there is no way the total number of energy conserved during Earth Hour around the world can be calculated, a few countries have come up with the estimated power saved from the 2012 Earth Hour commemoration.
4. 6.8% power drop (193MW) was seen in Toronto, Canada. The amount is equivalent to the total power 128,000 homes need in an hour.
5. Dubai sees a 6% increase of total power saved as compared to 2011, with the total of 216,000 KW/h and 130,000 kg carbon emission cut down during the hour.
6. Vietnam saved 546,000 kWh of electricity, equivalent to VND712 million (US$34,000) during Earth Hour, in which 48 provinces and cities participated.
7. This is just the result in an hour, the energy that reduced is equivalent to the average energy needs of a city.
