Why Students Should Have Less Homework The United States and other countries that give a lot of homework to students did not do very well on the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) test which compares over 70 countries educational programs. Other countries such as Finland give out less than half an hour of homework most nights and performed very well on the PISA. Giving less homework helps student learn better and perform better on tests. Finland is not doing well in the PISA just because of their light homework. They spend class time normally spent working on homework or projects for the students that are considered gifted help the slower learners, because of this the below average Finnish student is still ahead of most gifted students in America. The Finnish are focused on keeping the weaker students with everyone else instead of pushing the gifted students ahead like the US does to most students. Homework is not cut out of their schooling it is just switched to something more effective that helps slow learners and the faster learners get even more practice with the subject. Harris Cooper, a professor at Duke University, did a study to show that homework was beneficial for almost all students unless they had more than his suggested amount which was ten minutes for each
Students learn differently and most people, by the time they reach high school have a system that works. Any teacher, no matter how good, cannot make something that works for every single student. While homework helps some people learn, for most people it is just something they have to do once they learn how to do it and still have to study after doing the required homework anyway.
