Persuasive Essay: Should School Stay The Same?
For this debate I am debating why school time should stay the same. J.C.M.S middle school in Sierra Vista has a delayed start time of 9:00 a.m., and finish school at 4:00 p.m. This affects the children who are involved if afternoon sports, most time not getting out until 6:00 p.m sometimes later. If you have homework that same night after spending two hours doing a sport you might procrastinate and not do your homework at all or you will be tired and end up making mistakes that should not have been made. An earlier start time ensures an earlier release time letting sports start earlier and homework being done at an earlier time while not as exhausted from the day.

On the website sleepfoundation.org they did a research which stated, "The delay in release time for students also means that students with after-school jobs may be affected. This issue is important for certain students and their families who rely on the extra income to get by. Therefore, the change may disproportionately affect low income families." For low income families they might not be able to pay the bills if their child doesn't work with school, work, and homework it is hard to be able to get the recommended amount of sleep and do everything else that busy high school students have to face. In an article on the website parentingteens.about.com it states "Delaying the start time of high schools within a district could pose problems with bus schedules, after school activities, and sporting events. Most districts already have staggered start times for the schools and they report that delaying the high school start time would have a domino effect on all the schools that could

In a recent study at YHS 97.1% of students would rather start school later. Students should be able to start school later when they're awake. Students will have more time to eat in the morning instead of starving all day at school. Students will come with more energy instead of being dead at school. Students attendances would improve and reckless driving wouldn't occur so often. If school started later the increase on grades and attendances would go up.…

In the article “Our kids need more sleep” Written by Valerie Erde, she makes many good points about why school should be set back to a later time. First is how it increases academic alertness and vigilance. Second, is how a later start time decreases depression in teens and decreases tardiness and decreases truancy. Last, is how this later start time is actually helping the students get better grades. I one hundred percent agree with this and believe these policies should definitely be implemented.…

Introduction- Sara mckibben stated to the Start Schools Later Healthy Hours article, that more than 82.2% of U.S. middle, high, and combined public school require students to attend classes at times earlier than recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Children and teens need more sleep, but school starts so early they do not get that sleep. However some people think they should not start later in the day. Schools should start later in the day because children and teens need more sleep and teen car crashes happen more when teens are tired and have to go to school.…

“42 states reported that most (75%-100%) public schools started before 8:30 a.m” (“Schools Start Too Early”). Most schools start before 8:30. A decent amount of schools start around 7:20. Schools start early in the day and release later in the afternoon. This has become routine, but studies show that students who start early in the day perform worse in school compared to those who start later in the day. Schools should implement a later start time for higher schoolers since high schoolers would get around the recommended amount of sleep, preventing sleeping in school and high schoolers academics and safety will increase, since they will get enough sleep to study before school and prevent drowsiness.…

Many benefits would come from moving the start time to a later time. One issue with schools’ early start time is that students become sleep deprived. A teenages normal circadian sleep rhythm is they won’t fall asleep before 11 PM and they some have to be up by 5:00 or 6:00 AM to get ready and to be at school on time (npr). This is causing students to not get the healthy 8-10 hours of sleep that they need.…

Have you ever woken up feeling groggy and not wanting to go to school or do anything at all? As a result, many students go to school late or do not academically progress and participate in class. According to the Scholastic Scope article “Should School Start Later?” by Justin O’Neil and the article “Sleepy Teens: High School Should Start Later in the Morning” by Mark Fischetti, many schools are considering starting school later to help students succeed academically. Students have more trouble concentrating in class because they are not getting enough sleep. Some students arrive at school later because they oversleep. To make sure that there is less tardiness and the academic growth increases, schools are looking…

Students may become more involved with school. They will decrease their bad behaviors. Not to mention the mood shift for the better. Many studies have all pointed to the same thing: later start times are much better for the students. Students will be able to sleep longer and feel much more well rested. That leads to all kinds of academic, mental, and behavioral benefits. Make schools better with just one simple step: delay the start time. By benefiting the students, the schools are raising a better generation and, therefore, a better future for all of…

Researchers have found that 59% of middle schoolers and 87% of high schoolers are getting less than the recomended 8 to 9 hours of sleep a night (National Sleep Foundation). “Conflicts between parents and school districts”(Pediatricians Say School Should Start Later for Teens Health) the conflict with starting school later has had a lot of controversy. Parents think that it is horrifically challenging to move schedules up and back with the school districts. Why? Parents have busy schedules with work and have to change their work setting or call into their job and say that they are late. It is a very confusing aspect because students want to start later for the better benefit of them. On the other hand parents have to get to work early and make sure that there kids are at school at the same time. Parents seem to struggle abundantly when it comes to school starting later. Sometimes they have to call someone to take their kids because they have a different working schedule than their kids going to school. It is a very beneficial change that people in schools need to look into because students seem to like the idea of it. It benefits them on their sleep and the way the day…

One reason school start times should be later than they are now is because junior high and high school students are “programmed” to stay up late and sleep in. During teenage years, students bodies are designed to stay up later and sleep in. Both When Sleep Becomes A Nightmare, an article written by Scholastic, and the National Sleep Foundation website agree with just that! Nancy Shute, an award-winning science journalist, stated on npr.com “...it’s difficult, if not impossible, for them to fall asleep before 10:30.” If students fall asleep at 10:30 pm and get the recommended amount of rest, which is 9 ½ hours, students should not wake up until 7:00 am. Some schools have already started class at this…

First, if middle and high schools started later, the bus times would not be coextending with elementary bus times, which would cost all school districts to evoke more buses, and would cost more money all across the country. Next, most school districts have delicately balanced their bus times, and all the change would be exhausting for families, teachers, and bus drivers. Kurt Vonnegut once said,”Laughter and tears are both responses to frustration and exhaustion. I myself prefer to laugh, since there is less cleaning up to do afterward.” Ultimately, shifting start times will cause traffic congestion for teachers and students, making it harder to get to school on time even when late start has been implemented.…

In conclusion, if the school start time is pushed back, our after school activities are pushed back, we will get home later and we will have less time to study and we will get less sleep. Starting school later in the morning does NOT give us more time to sleep. We will be forced to stay up later to study for the big test, to finish the project, and to do the thirty math problems we haven’t made a dent in yet because we haven’t had TIME. We will be waking up an hour earlier to finish homework we were too tired to get done the night before and we will end up getting less…

About 59% of middle school students aren’t getting the recommended nine hours of sleep each night that they need.As a result, many middle school students are sleep deprived. Students ask themselves “why does school have to start so early?” on a daily basis without receiving an answer. Usually, teens find it difficult to fall asleep early and get their 8 hours of sleep, therefore the next day they wake up early, and they're tired all day at school. That is a norm for middle and high school students, and it shouldn’t be. School start times are too early, and need to be change to a later time in order for students to get their full 8 hours of rest.…
