she stayed up past midnight finishing her homework that was due the next day. I’d hate to imagine how she was feeling having to wake up a couple hours later for school. Another reason is kids are not fully awake for school. The National Sleep Foundation conducted a survey and found out that 2/3 high school kids get seven hours of sleep. With that being said the average amount a teenager needs 8 1/2 - 9 hours of sleep. The kids are not getting the sleep they need. They are not being able to focus in school and perform at their best. The teens years are the most stressful times, and they need all the help they can get. Some would argue that students need to get used to getting up early for college and the jobs they will have in the future.
Kids are still in the age when their brains are still growing. The brain doesn’t fully develop until people are in their mid-20s or early 30s.They need sleep in order for them to get full brain activity. If kids are falling asleep they aren’t learning. It is found that 33% of kids fall asleep in class and that is still too much. Starting school later could also improve school attendance. Dr. Kyla Wahlstrom did a study about pushing back start times. When they pushed the times back to 8:40, she found that more kids went to school than before. She also found more students benefited from those few more hours of sleep. With more kids coming to school it will make their future more successful. They are the next generation after us. Our future and their future relies on them. We want to give them the tools and resources they need. So we need to make school more convenient for them. Starting school later in the day kids will be able to function during the school day, getting the sleep they need, and having an increase of school attendance. We want our kids to be excited about school and want to go. In all, school times should be pushed back at least 40 minutes. It will help students get the sleep they need so they can be proficient in school and be ready to give it their
best.
