Personal Narrative: Civil Rights
It was 8th period and I was working on my Civil Rights project with my group. I was going to my first basketball game. My mom never lets me go anywhere, so I was excited to go to my schools basketball game. We were all packing up when my friend Citlaly asked, “ Are you going to the basketball game after school?” “Yes, I am. Are you going ?”, I replied.
“Yes, but first I’m going to meet Dezerie in the quad.”
As soon as I was going to reply the bell rang and I started walking towards my best friend Aubrey's class, I saw her and we started running towards each other and getting excited because my mom never lets me go anywhere.
“ Yay! We can go to the game now!”, she said
“ I know! let's go find everyone.” I said.
We started walking towards the gate and started going towards the side of the school. There we saw all of our friends, and we all started having conversations and getting pumped up.

I didn’t know we were going to go to Starbucks, and started getting nervous because my mom specifically said that i couldn’t get out of school.
“Everyones going Marisol, just go.” said Liliana.
I decided to go and while we were going to the street light i kept on getting worried that one of my mom's friend would see me and tell my mom. As we were walking down the street Liliana said,” Some of my friends are going to come meet us at Starbucks, okay?”
I was feeling overwhelmed and just wanted the day to be over. I didn’t want anyone to meet us because i just wanted it to be Aubrey, Liliana, and I.
“ okay, that's fine. They could come.”, I

The main reason why I was so nervous is because the school I was coming from was very small and private. I went to Our Lady of Grace from kindergarten to eighth grade. The student body there was around two hundred and fifty at the time. There was only one teacher and class of about thirty students for every grade. There wasn’t a student or teacher that I didn’t know by name and because I had been going there since I was five years old, I really didn’t know any other way.…

To begin with, I was over my grandma's house on a warm and cozy summer night. When out of the blue my mom asks Me if I would rather go to school online or regular high school she stated that if I chose to go to school online I'll be going to a school named Penn foster. Because it would let me work at my own pace, it didn't cost too much, plus they would help me if I didn't quite understand one of my courses. My first thought was wow why the heck not! and blurted out yep I wanna go to school…

The Civil War legacy still has an impact on Americans today. Today, most Americans look at the Civil War in an awe-inspired perspective. People try to skip over the blood and ugliness that resulted because of it, and instead try to focus on the courage and heroic deeds that soldiers performed. Many today are more likely to view the war as a fight for black freedom instead of for state’s rights, which is what it had previously been known for. The South still seems proud of the Confederate flag, even though it is the cause of a lot of controversy. Some people view it as part of their heritage. Certain topics of the Civil War are still well-known throughout society. Abraham Lincoln, the Gettysburg Address, and the Emancipation proclamation are all examples of what people associate with the Civil War. People try to remember iconic people and images like these, instead of the blood, gore, and hate that took place.…

When I was a child, my favorite movie was The Wizard of Oz. Out of all of Dorothy’s friends, the Cowardly Lion was probably my least favorite. He had gone to ask the Wizard for courage and I didn’t understand why. Others wanted tangible items such as a brain or a heart and yet he wanted courage. I had thought of courage as something that you just dug down and found within yourself when you needed it not something not just a material thing that was necessary to live like a brain or a heart. Courage is something I always felt I had within, but it was confirmed within myself when my school hit major news over racial issues.…

There is no doubt that South Carolina is one of the few states making progress down south but to fulfill my wants/needs I needed to move here to New York. After months of contemplating I realized that for a chance to be treated as everyone else that I would need to make this change, I needed the money that work would bring, a chance to showcase my talents and living conditions near the plantation were harsh and unfair. I feel that this was the best decision to make at this point in time. Times are changing and we deserve to be, act and live better.…

When I was much younger, I had the opportunity to live in rural Georgia. While living there I had the assumption, since I had medical insurance everyone else does too. During this time I made some friends of which I had learned their family did not have health insurance. This raised my awareness of various topics. The first was not everyone is the same and not everyone has what you have. Looking back after reading and the live classroom, I realize having health insurance was a privilege, and in my case could be considered an unearned privilege. This is due to the fact my health insurance, which was earned by my father who was serving in the US Air Force, was given to me because I was his dependent. Listening to the live classroom, I came across some similarities as my classmates.…
