Personal Narrative
The wonderful gift of giving is more precious than any material item that is just used for simple amusement. There is no greater feeling than the one you get from knowing you personally affected someone. In the situation that I'm going speak about, I got a chance to see how one's joyous gratitude can emotionally touch another. Experiences like these are the ones that gave me an extra sense of maturity and also helped me grow to be a better person overall. It all began on the first bus route of my summer job. The first stop was at the corner of Halifax and Liberty Street. Two girls boarded the bus, and carried themselves as if they were normal children living a normal life. As

About the second week of camp the bus driver and I took a new route to pick up the kids. We rode down Halifax Street and then stopped at the homeless shelter. I said "Mrs. Carol," which was the bus driver's name, " why are we stopping right here?" and before she got to say anything I saw the two girls run out of the building. That was one of the most shocking moments of my life, but I didn't let the girls see my emotion, I just greeted them as I would any bus rider. Although I hid my shock from the girls, in the back of my mind I couldn't help but think of something to do for them since they were so well behaved and underprivileged at the same …show more content…
They were ecstatic. It one of the many times they almost brought tears to my eyes. A day before the trip something made me ask the girls if they had swimming suits or shoes and they both said no. I had to get with my supervisor once again and figure out how we were going to get what they needed. Then she said " You know the girls don't have a ride to the Armory" which was the trip drop off area. So, we had two problems to solve. We were up for any challenge at this point in time. I went to Wal-Mart to get the girls some swim shoes and accessories while my supervisor went to Target to get the bathing suits. Later that night we called Mrs. Carol and asked if she could pick up the two girls before she did her regular bus routes, and of course she said yes because she enjoyed the sisters just as well as we did. I thought everything was done, and there was nothing else to do, but of course I was wrong. I forgot the girls had to have spending money. Then I asked my mother to ask all of my aunts if they would help my cause with small donations. I got $30.00. At first I thought they could just split that, but I wanted to have a carefree day. The morning of the trip arrived and the kids were on time and just as happy as anyone I've ever seen. The older sister approached me and said " Thank you Coach D" and that was when I decided to reach in my pocket and give her $60.00 to split with

When I was walking into Food Lion to grab an item, I noticed an elderly woman struggling with trying to get her items to the car. At first I thought to myself how no one has helped her yet and then thought again that I should have already been there to help. My roommate noticed I ran off and she followed right behind. I then proceeded to ask the woman if she would like any sort of assistance with her groceries, the woman shook her head and said yes. This made me ecstatic that I could help and I was thrilled my roommate came over to help out as well. After we help we walked in and it made me want to go help other people with their groceries.…

A dozen squealing, laughing little girls tugged my arms, legs and hands. They were so excited to show me their bedroom. Meeting all the orphans at the Colima, Mexico orphanage was very overwhelming and very emotional. At first, I felt very out of place, like seeing grass during a Michigan winter. All these kids surrounding me right now have no families and have nobody to love them. These kids were all beautiful in their own way and really knew how to make you smile without even trying. They were like flowers in a rundown parking lot. Beautiful but with a dark, sad background. Everytime they looked at you, you could see the excitement in their eyes.…

These people were malnourished, sickly, underserved, and lacking the necessities of life. I remember thinking how lucky I am to have the simple pleasures of a hot shower, shelter, clean clothing, and the ability to visit a doctor. That is the moment I knew working in an underserved community is my calling. I wanted to help these people and provide for them. I wanted to provide them the healthcare they needed. From the little girls’ single touch, to the harsh reality that many people are starving and lacking health care, this moment alone helped define my experience with underserved communities.…

During the last two weeks of my junior year, every student in my class was required to volunteer at a service site. For my service, I chose to go to the Mary Ryder Home, an all-women’s residential care facility for women of low-income status. I chose the home because it was around five minutes away from my high school and some seniors had told me that they had loved it there. During my time there, I came to bond with some of the women by painting their nails, talking about their grandchildren, or by watching soap operas with them. Many of the women in the home were very lonely and often gravitated towards me because they thought I would become friends with them.…

Going to feed my Starving Children was a great experience for me. From the name of it I thought that we would be putting nonperishable items into a box for families. When I got to the building and seeing what was there I was very surprised to see what it was actually. When I was there with my classmates I think we had a good time putting the dry ingredients into a plastic bag that was sealed up and put into a box to be shipped somewhere. Not knowing where it was going was a question I had in my head as I stood there packing it up. I have always heard my parents tell me that I am wasting food and that there are children out there without food. I never really took it to heart until the moment of…

In the spring of last year, my mother and I were walking down the street on our way to serve dinner to the homeless when it turned into a nightmare. The place we had enjoyed going to together and helping those in need became a place that made us shudder and think of bad thoughts. At 4:15 we were attacked and robbed in front of hundreds of people waiting in line to get the dinner that we were going to serve them. I watched, helpless, as my mom had her hair pulled and was punched multiple times. It was such a traumatic event that had a lasting impact on how I felt downtown. After the attack I remember some very kind people getting out of their spots in line to come and offer their help; this helped us to feel safer but because of the nature…

During my junior year of high school, I went on a mission trip/volleyball expedition with my club team. We traveled down to Nicaragua because this was a new experience for everyone involved. When we first got off the plane it was a completely different atmosphere than what any of us were used to. As soon as you leave baggage claim, you are greeted by a large sea of people. The only thing keeping the two of you apart is a tiny glass door which leads to the streets you exit from. After we left the airport and checked into our hotels we were on the road to do our first part of community service. We met in this large dusty field with make shift bases and a small pitcher’s mound. We later found out that it was home to a youth girl’s kickball league. The girls were from the ages of eight through sixteen. You could tell that they didn’t have much and kickball was there whole life, but they always had a smile on their face and made the best of everything. When we were playing with the girls, we got to talk with them a little bit but there were some barriers because they couldn’t speak English, and we didn’t know much Spanish. Despite that, we were able to laugh and joke with the girls. Seeing the way they smiled and how they were able to make the best or most out of everything showed me that you don’t always need the material things in life that you can be alright and still find happiness.…

When I was about 12 years old, we moved into a new neighborhood. It was a very nice, "upper middle" class neighborhood. We were the, I guess, the poor family in the neighborhood. There was this one girl who lived next door to us whose parents were very wealthy. She was hateful. So mean. Every time she saw my sisters, or me her friends would talk about us or make fun of our clothes. For a long time I hated all rich kids. One day, out of nowhere I met a girl named Sam. She stood up for me and asked me why I had not stood up for myself. I answered, because rich people are just mean and hateful. I wouldn't waste my time or breath to even argue with them. After a while, Sam and I had become friends. She spent the night over our house all of the time. The weird thing was that I never went or stayed the night at hers. Her mom always brought her over and picked her up.…

I still recall that day, and the sky blue and the sun was low. My mum and I were walking to the supermarket after we had dinner. Dusk fell after sunset, and workers stopped work. Back in fifth grade my house had caught fire. It was one of the scariest things in my life. As a fifth grader, dolls and going outside to play soccer were the things I held most sacred. This one event changed my entire outlook on life and showed me what was truly important in my life: my family. When I moved into a hotel for months it made me realize, trivial things like clothes and toys aren’t what makes a home your home it’s the people that are with you through it all. Also, the enormous support we got from the community helped me understand the true meaning of giving. Although this happened to me at a young age, the lessons still ring true today. I never wanted anyone to feel like they were alone and helpless, so every time an opportunity presents itself I feel the need to help. Whenever faced with a difficult decision or see someone in need I look back on this and it reminds me to place myself in their shoes and do whatever I can to help.…

Saturday two weeks after the flood we volunteered to help in repacking the clothes that we need to distribute to the victims of Sendong. We need to repack donations from different provinces in the Philippines and we were able to repack at least 500 sacks for the infants, adults and the teens, alike. On the day of the trip, we wore our best club t-shirts and gathered in front of the school gate. We brought tins of paint, rollers and brushes. Not to mention gifts and clothes for them! Fully prepared like soldiers, we ‘marched’ into the bus and took a ride which was a stone’s throw away to the orphanage. When we reached the place, we saw kids running and playing in the compound. Some were a little glum, maybe feeling down in the dumps being an orphan.…
