Although many people are taught to handle different situations differently, I think that deception is ok in SOME cases. Viola deceives many when she decides that she wants to disguise herself as a man to work for the Duke. However when Maria deceives, its not completely ok, because she just wants revenge and to be spiteful. Viola is a woman, who was shipwrecked. After being shipwrecked, Viola decides to disguise herself as a man, to work for the duke. “Conceal me what I am, and be my aid for such disguise as happily shall become the form of my intent, I’ll serve this duke, thou shalt present me as a eunuch to him.” (Act I, Scene II; 13). Cesario is the duke’s servant/messenger. Viola will soon start to fall in love with the duke, but she can’t tell him, because of the disguise. Viola in the play is doing all the deceiving to the duke and Olivia, because she was dressing herself as a man,”Cesario”. She did this to trick them into thinking that she was really a man, even though she is really a woman. Lying to everyone made her start believing what has been said; but she doesn’t want the duke to know, because that will mess up her plan. ‘For such disguise as happily shall become the form of my intent I’ll sense the duke.” (Act I, Scene II; 57-58). Viola is an extrinsic woman that has disguises herself as a man to instruct a perfect relationship. Viola in her disguise herself as Cerario appears at Olivia’s estate, Olivia allows Cerario to speak with her privately about Orisino’s love. Olivia falls in love with Cesario, not knowing that Cesario is really a woman which is Viola that is in love with the duke. Now a love triangle is formed. “Who saw Cesario ho? On your attendance, my lord, here. Stand, you awhile aloof-Cesario, thou know’st no less but all…Stand at her doors and tell them; There thy fixed foot shall grow till thou have audience. (Act I, Scene II; 11-14,

The movie She’s the Man is based on the Shakespeare Twelfth Night because in the movie it goes to show how the idea of gender stereotypes is still influenced in today's society and what the mainstream perceptions are about gender roles to show how the idea of gender equality transcends to the twelfth century. In the movie and twelfth Night the theme of disguise is very important because Olivia in the movie was very passionate about soccer to the fact that she was willing to disguises herself as her brother, so she can be able to compete with the boys soccer team. Unfortunately, her school disbands the girls soccer team. However, in Twelfth Night Viola decided to disguise herself as a man named Cesario, so she would not be in a vulnerable position in…

Viola’s pursuit at catching Orsino’s eye was easily done once her disguise abled her to get close to him. Without her disguise, she would be viewed as just another woman trying to compete for Orsino’s love, which he proclaims is only for Olivia. In act 2, scene iv, Orsino opens up to Cesario, his trusted confidant. He talks to Cesario and tells him all about how he views love. He explains to Cesario that, “For, boy, however we do praise ourselves, Our fancies are more giddy and unfirm, More longing, wavering, sooner lost and worn, Than women’s are,” (II, iv 30-34). This helps Viola, as she’s able to understand that men, especially Orsino, have wavering affections towards women, so she should not worry about his love for Olivia. Without her ability to get Orsino to confide in her, she wouldn’t really know what to do or how to act towards him. Gaining this information, she’s able to act on it in a way that completely alters the play.…

Apart from having to deal with the loss of her brother, she also had to find a way to survive in Illyria. Perhaps this is where the resilience in Viola's nature is first shown and instead of breaking down and mourning the death of her loved one, she immediately devises a plan to disguise herself as a male and serve duke Orsino. However being brave and mature for her age, Viola never offered a complaint throughout the play about her emotions and acts went unappreciated. Though she was young, perhaps she was the only character of the play who truly understood how loved worked that it was something rare and beautiful, and something that cannot be forced by one onto another no matter what. This may have been why she never complained or showed excessive sadness when the duke did not seem to reciprocate her…

Viola's choice to serve Duke Orsino as a page in hopes of finding her brother is by no means unethical, and her efforts are ultimately successful, but she does develop a major existential crisis when she assumes the identity of Cesario. Upon agreeing to woo Olivia on Orsino's behalf, Viola realizes that her service has encountered a “barful strife” with her unexpected love for Orsino (1.4.41). Chiefly, she is unable to reveal her desires due to Cesario's inabilities to both accurately represent Viola and offer a genuine heterosexual intimacy. Moreover, the unknown whereabouts of Sebastian deter Viola from risking her position in Orsino's court. Viola's freedom has become chained to love and servitude, as her overarching goal, locating her brother, prevents her from acting in good faith to herself. Even Viola's disagreement with Orsino, in which she claims that “In faith, they [women] are as true of heart as we [men],” is accepted with a biased civility (2.4.106). Orsino, who harbors an omnipresent misogynistic attitude, would likely dismiss Viola's argument without consideration if it came from a woman. While her beliefs and story are authentic, the latter by a technicality, she can only present Cesario's opinions and charisma rather than her own. These unique circumstances do benefit Viola and allow her to develop a “brotherly love” that would be inherently impossible for a woman, and “Cesario” certainly enjoys an enhanced credibility towards Orsino, but maintaining this guise requires her to maintain a tragic duality. Viola is only able to end this internal conflict when she reunites with Sebastian, allowing her to…

The uncertainty of identity and disguising of characters throughout Twelfth Night presents a theme with a lot of confusion but also great comedic implications. Mistaken identity is shown when twins Viola and Sebastian are misidentified for one another, enhancing the comic confusion amongst the characters. This is more apparent in Act 5 Scene 1; however Shakespeare contributes to this comedy through disguise to develop a sense of dramatic irony in a homoerotic subtext where Olivia falls in love with a woman, Viola falls in love with Orsino while confined as a male and Orsino shows attraction towards Cesario. Disguise is also presented at more minor sections of the play through Feste and Malvolio.…
