Overcapacity In High Schools
Overcapacity High School Students at Sherwood schools at lunch now have to race to the lunchroom to get an open seat. The seating during has decreased ever since the school's capacity limit has been reached. For the past few years the Sherwood High School in Sherwood, Oregon has been as dense as tungsten and over capacity and they need more space. Good schools and a wealthy community have attracted more people and the more people who move in, the more students that attend school. When the school was built, it wasn't built for what the population of Sherwood is now, therefor the school is running out of space fast so they have to make some adjustments to classrooms so students fit. They added more classrooms and increased class sizes. Plans …show more content…
In fact this year, they have 1720 students attending class. Students at lunch often eat elsewhere because there are no open seats in the commons. One anonymous student says, “at lunch, me and my friends sit on the staircase because there is no tables available” .The school's lack of space has forced classroom sizes to increase and rooms that are not meant to be rooms to become classrooms to fit more students. With a new high school being built, what will happen to the old high school? There is going to be another vote for a bond in November to change some schools around. The middle school will become the Hopkins Elementary School, both middle schools will move into the old high school and Hopkins Elementary School will house district offices. Laurel Ridge, will become an additional elementary school. Laurel Ridge, a middle school and Edy Ridge, an elementary school was built when the middle school got crowded.     Imagine, kids being better of for scholarships and going into college with a plan because they had more opportunities with more classes. Classes are far more interactive and easier to teach because classes have fewer students. Teachers jobs become much easier to handle because they don’t have to teach 5 different classes. All of this would be fixed by hiring more teaching staff for East Jordan High School. EJHMS can be improved by hiring more teaching staff, but only if you as a board member of EJHMS can help. There are many solutions to this dilemma. Put Mrs. Cardwell on full time to make classes smaller and give her room for another elective. Hire a teacher that is qualified to teach Honors/AP Sciences and Maths and elective having to do with those subjects. Hire another English teachers to free up English schedules, make them able to teach more of one kind of class and offer more electives such as speech. As a member of the school board, it is your job to make this institution the best that you can. To make this school better educationally, you must hire more teaching staff.
