Organized Sports Research Paper
Organized sports are an important part of a student’s total education. The values derived from the positive experience of participation in a good athletic program are immeasurable and will carry into other aspects of a student’s life. Values like effort, attitude, honesty, respect and sportsmanship will be taught everyday.

A primary concern of mine as a coach on the collegiate level is for each player to excel in the classroom and leave with a marketable degree at the end of her college experience. A sincere and conscientious student will be a sincere and conscientious basketball player. Each player will be a student first and an athlete second. No exceptions allowed!

I create a practice atmosphere that requires my players to think and concentrate on all aspects of the game of basketball. This focused “mind set” will carry-over into game situations.

Teaching defense is a challenging and rewarding adventure. As a coach, I want my players to take individual and team PRIDE in the team defense. Playing aggressive defense as a unit will foster team chemistry, pride and unity. These accomplishments are vitally important to the overall success of a good program.

On offense, I find the up-tempo game more enjoyable to watch and coach. I instill confidence in my players to fast break at every opportunity. Concealed behind each of these profiles is teamwork. There is no way to make it to the top in any sport without it. If a professional player is only performing within the confines of their responsibilities and nothing else, then they are not playing to their max capability, in my opinion. Just because someone is good in sports doesn’t mean that they have it all together in their interpersonal relationships either. And, relationship changes everything. John Wooden said “those who work alone will never become all they could become if they were working in cooperation with others”. Wooden said loyalty was the force that forges individuals into a team and that it was what gets us through hard times. Regarding team spirit, the coach emphasized that eagerness communicates an attitude of “I’ll be happy to sacrifice personal accomplishments for the good of the team”. “We don’t have to be superstars to reach competitive greatness. All we have to do is learn to rise to every occasion, give our best effort and make those around us better as we do…

In his book “Wooden on Leadership,” the coach reveals that he never focused on his teams’ records or gauged success or failure on wins versus losses. Rather, he defined success as “peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best of which you are capable.” Wooden told his players that there would always be someone who is faster, stronger or jumps higher, so they should focus their collective energy and attention toward something they could control: maximizing their potential. This lesson, along with other teachings revealed in the book, are applicable to all of us, not just jocks.…

Offense and defense are both important, but the game is actually split into three parts, offense, rebounding, and defense. But rebounding went into defense, more than it did offense. The ultimate goal of offense is to score as many points as possible. While, the primary task for defense is to prevent the opposing team from scoring. Offense is how a team ends possessions by scoring. Defense is how a team gains a possession by stealing the ball, or getting the rebound. Without either, the game is not as fun to play or watch. In addition, without offense you can’t win, and without defense you still can’t win.…

Some of the reasons I love basketball are because it is challenging, helps me improve myself as a person, and teaches me a lot about life. In this sport, I have learned how to mentally prepare myself for hardships. When I am in a game and down two points with only a few seconds left on the clock, I know exactly which play to run. I also know how to use what energy I have left in my body and mental concentration to fight through any injury or obstacle. I have been taught to plan in advance and think two steps ahead during the game. In life, this helps me plan, organize, and execute anything I have to do to get around any…
