According to Philip Lau his research paper “The Limitations of Wikipedia” he informs his readers on the disadvantages of using wikipedia as a reliable source for research. Lau analyzes the controversy of using wikipedia as a reliable source. He states how its great for using it as a starting point on any research, however its to be used with great caution. Lau clarifies on how wikipedia is a software that allows people to “collaborate” in adding content. In simpler terms anyone with an account can add, modify, rearrange or delete information on any desired article. Lau also states that many articles consist of opinionated beliefs. Not all entries in the site will be objective for example controversial topics will most likely reflect on both sides of the issue. He goes on to say that anyone can create a website or pay to have a book published and claim to be an expert.Which means that credibility among publishers lack on this site.
This article was a great example of a descriptive essay. He combined his own ideas with quotes and paraphrases from his sources.as well as detailed facts to suport his ideas. For example in page 4 Lau states, “Another problem with wikipedia is the ease with which entries can be easily edited, because the content of wikis can be altered by anyone.”. Lau used the example of the notorious case of john Seigenthaler Sr. “He was a journalist who was falsely accused in a wikipedia entry of being involved in the assassination of John F Kennedy. The false information stayed on the site for four months”
This article was was well stated and made me realize how dangerous using wikipedia as a source can be. I was one of those people that would turn to wikipedia for assistance when I would procrastinate an entire week on an assignment. Aside from risking plagiarism the source might not even be as reliable as well

Randall McClure’s essay “Googlepedia” assesses current students’ predominate approach to research-based writing, and uses realistic ways to push such approaches further. He does this by analyzing two of his students’ methods. Of the strategies his students use, perhaps the most effective is Edward’s use of Wikipedia as a leaping off point, before delving further and entering search terms into Google (230). This practice should be just the beginning of an in-depth research process. However, Edward’s successional use of search engines does provide a template for an ideal research process. In addition, although he does not go nearly in depth, he does include an assessment of the author’s credibility (229). More rigorous assessment could greatly…

    a. Why are wikis, forums and blogs not considered valid sources for academic research? Minimum 50 words. I think that wikis, forums and blogs are not valid sources for academic research because these are all contributed to by regular people who base their input on their own opinions and findings, not by reading it or citing it from any type of academic text. These are all based on personal findings and not referenced to any type of reference book in any way.…

Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia; providing facts, advice, and opinions from one or more contributors. Although it provides users with a vast amount of information there is often no citation for the facts, which does not allow the reader to confirm the credibility of the record. The mere fact that anyone can manipulate the content submitted allows some readers to challenge the website information as biased or fabricated. Credentials are an important aspect of research; providing information only on topics in which they publish on their website.…

Wikipedia has been a successful source of information.Wikipedia does have a wealth of knowledge. I have used it a lot to find facts about different people, places, and books. It is a convenient way to look up information. It is a temporary solution to research. However when you are doing research Wikipedia is not a credible source nor is it recommended by professors. Anyone can post material on Wikipedia as stated in the disclaimer. So this information does not necessarily have to be the most accurate. This information could be old the facts may not…

Thirdly, the writer explains how as a result of anyone being able to modify a post on Wikipedia, the chances of the user modifying his or her bias opinion is immensely high. The essayist also provides a definition of opinion making it clear to the reader that Wikipedia posts tend to be one-sided. Furthermore, Philip adds Wikipedia’s quote warning users “not to believe everything they read including the information on Wikipedia”. Philip then illustrates how political figures and subjects like abortion are slandered and vandalized on Wikipedia, making it harder for a student to find useful…

However, just because it has a lot of information doesn’t mean that it is all good information. Academic writing is a very accurate type of writing that can require many unbiased, reliable, credible, and relevant sources. I do not think all Wikipedia articles are held to these standards and so, I do not believe Wikipedia is an acceptable source for academic writing. Wikipedia is largely supposed to be an unbiased source by their own standards. However, not all articles are monitored enough to keep people’s biases from sticking through their writing.…

For instance, I can make edits and not have a clue of what I’m talking about. My edits will be published and someone might go behind me and believe what is posted. Facts can be misleading, have a lot of missing points, or they can post what they want people to know instead of posting raw material. But most times, when people think information is bogus, they do their research someone where else. On the contrary, Wikipedia eliminates the constant publication of actual encyclopedia’s. Books are starting to go out of style. We now have the option to use the internet or purchase one device that could download hundreds of books. Wikipedia is a website that is free of charge to use, but accepts donations, and information is relatively easy to find. Most times when we use the search engine to find information, Wikipedia normally comes up first. Unfortunately, we can’t use that site as a credible source even if the article seems appropriate. Popular articles such as the biography of Martin Luther King Jr. may contain credible information because it’s scrutinized by devoted correctors. Although there are a lot of advantages and disadvantages to Wikipedia, dedicated editors try their best to assure that the information that is published is accurate.…
