Be Smart - Understanding Food Labels and Nutrition FactsWritten by Patty Poon, M.Sc. last updated: May 2006Grocery shopping and reading labels are a delight for some and a real headache for others. Regardless of how you feel about them, determining whether a particular food product fits into your healthy diet plan has become easier. In addition to listing the amounts of macronutrients (fat, protein and carbohydrate including fiber), a food label may also indicate vitamin and mineral content of the product. This provides good information to help a consumer determine if a particular food product meet his or her nutritional needs.What is on A Nutrition Facts Label?Food labels are designed to help consumers make healthy food choices. In 1990, the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act went into effect. The USDA and the FDA developed these guidelines so that consumers would have access to useful nutritional information to help make smart choices.But how do you make sense of a food label?According to the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act, all packaged food products must contain the following information: * Common name of the product * Name and address of the product's manufacturer * Net contents in terms of weight, measure or count, and * Ingredient list and Nutrition Facts Components of a Nutrition Facts panel | Nutrition FactsCommon nutrients, such as total fat, cholesterol, and sodium, are required fields. Other nutrients, such as potassium and Vitamin K, are optional and not required to be listed. Each package must identify the quantities of specified nutrients and food constituents for one serving. It is important to note the following: * 1 g of fat = 9 kcal * 1 g of protein = 4 kcal * 1 g of carbohydrate = 4 kcal * 1 g of alcohol = 7 kcalServing SizeServing sizes are standardized to make for easier comparison among similar food items.     A person needs to understand that when they consume a product there is always a nutrition facts label on the back that states how many servings are in a product and the single serving amount. The nutrition facts are represented for what a single serving contributes. An example of serving size is if a person eats a whole jar of peanut butter in one sitting, they are consuming fifteen servings of that product. Calories are another item that a person needs to view when they look at the nutrition facts label. When a person eats a serving size of peanut butter which is two tablespoons, they are consuming 190 calories, the fat calories of that single serving is 140 calories. So if a person eats 4 tablespoons of peanut butter they are eating 380 calories of peanut butter with a total of 280 fat calories. Limiting nutrient intake of an item such as saturated fat is a recommended thing to do to make sure that a person does not go over the recommended daily allowance and to maintain a healthy well balanced lifestyle. It is also important to make sure that a person is getting the right amount of a particular nutrient. For example vitamin A, C, and E are all important nutrients that many people lack in their diets. Making sure that these are all included in foods people eat will make them healthier and even prevent against some diseases. At the end of the nutrition facts label is called the foot note. Many people overlook that part or when they read it do not understand what they are viewing. When reading this people needs to understand that it is a %DV that is based on a 2,000 calorie diet. Understanding the percent daily allowance is making sure that a person is not going over or being under a particular item.…

    Drinks labeled as dietary supplements have to report any case of incident pertaining to their product but drinks listed as “conventional food” do not. Also in the way dietary supplements have to list the quantity of ingredients in their beverage but “conventional food” don’t have to warn their consumers about their intake of caffeine or taurine. Large companies like Red Bull and monster have been hiding under these clauses for over five years while they have consumers die because of their products. Also in the nutrition facts these companies make their drink look a lot less than they really are, in several twelve to twenty four fluid ounce drinks contain two to three serving sizes per can. So what the nutrition facts are telling you is that the number under sugar carbs and sever other ingredients are either two to three times more than what are listed. Due to this these major companies have been sued for false advertising but were never apprehended of the offense and got away with several lawsuits.…
