In order to do this nurses are required to actively participate to nursing research and critique them. Nursing research has increased greatly in the past three decades exposing nurses to latest knowledge, to provide quality care to the patients (Polit & Beck, 2004). A1. The nursing profession has evolved significantly over the decades. One of the factors that have greatly influenced these changes has been the involvement of nurses in the development of theories and data base needed to support the advancement of our profession. In the last half of the twentieth century, nurse researchers (1950s) and nurse theorists (1960s and 1970s) greatly contributed to the expanding body of nursing knowledge with their studies of nursing practice and the development of nursing models and theories (American Nurses Association, 2010, p. 16). Like in any other research activity, a special set of skills is needed in order to conduct the research required so that the whole process can be validated appropriately. Retaining an advanced practice nurse (APN) as a co-investigator and mentor is a vital part in the nursing process for the project to take shape (Gallagher, 2012, para. 5). The masters prepared nurse can be a key element of the research team providing guidance, expertise and ensuring that the information needed to appropriately conduct the research project is available. This professional can also help select members of the research team and find the latest up-to-date evidence based practice, journals, articles and other useful references as well as studies that can help with the task at hand. Research has greatly advanced our profession as well as helped improve the delivery of health as well as its outcomes. For this reason it is important that it is encouraged at all levels of our profession.…

Evidence-based practice (EBP) has been emphasized since the publication of the Institute of Medicine’s report “To Err Is Human”. Nurses should be able to not only provide standard care within the scope of practice but also deliver safe care based on the best EBP that is most up-to-date at that time. Furthermore, research is developed based on the current evidence-based practice. Research nurses work on new projects to conceptualize innovative ideas, generate literature research, and conduct clinical trials to develop new evidence-based practice. The reason why evidence-based practice and research are important is because health…

According to Masters (2017, p. 255), “evidence-based practice (EBP) is a mechanism that allows nurses to provide safe, high-quality patient care based on evidence grounded in research and professional expertise rather than tradition, myths, hunches, advice from peers, outdated textbooks, or even what the nurse learned in school 5, 10, 15 years ago”. EBP allows nurses to apply current evidence using advanced technology and expert knowledge appropriately. It also allows nurses to practice safely and efficiently while making sound decisions based on relevant research. The purpose of this assignment is to critically evaluate two journal articles from a selection of six. One is a quantitative piece; the other is a qualitative piece. A framework devised by Benton and Cormack (2000) has been used to help the process of critiquing in this assignment. This particular framework had been chosen, as it is a comprehensive framework covering most points needed in the critiquing process. This framework can be applied to both qualitative and quantitative research. However the framework will not be used as a definitive checklist. In this assignment the first article that will be discussed is a qualitative piece of research by Simons J., Franck L. &Roberson E (2001). Titled : Parent involvement in children's pain care: views of parents and nurses. Journal of Advanced Nursing, 36(4), 591-599.…

Nursing care in the 21st Century is evaluated more on the quality outcome for the patients and their families. Thus, there is a need for nurses to “draw upon three main approaches: research, evidence-based practice, and quality improvement” (Care Search, 2014) as they provide patient care. To optimize the benefits of these three approaches, it is important that nurses be able to understand the similarities and differences that exist among these three concepts, e.g., nursing research, evidence-based practice, and quality improvement.…
