Unit 3 Assignment 1
Lymphatic filariasis is an extremely painful infection of the lymphatic system. It is caused when thread-like filarial parasites are transmitted to humans through mosquitoes. There are three forms of the parasites which are Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi and Brugia timorican. The most common is Wuchereia bancrofti. When the mosquito bites the human, it injects the larvae into the blood stream which then circulates into the lymphatic system. The parasites can live up to six years in a human. The disease is most common in tropical areas and sub-tropical areas such as mid-Africa and southern Asia due to their elevated temperatures and moist climate CITATION Sab14 \l 1033 (Institute, 2014).

Standard diagnosis for filariasis is by blood smear. The parasites that cause the disease circulate through the blood at night so typically doctors will take a blood sample at night, then look for the parasite under a microscope. Once a person has been diagnosed doctors typically prescribe Diethylcarbamazine. Diethylcarbamazine kills the microvilli and some of the adult worms. It is no longer available in physicians in the United States because the Federal Drug Association has disapproved the drug. Though if lab results are positive then physicians can obtain the drug from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention CITATION Cen10 \l 1033 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,

The benefits of creating a Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) are numerous and include such things as less bandwidth consumption, greater security, and the ability for users to be in different geographical locations while still sharing resources. One plan to segment the network is to divide it into broadcast domains, reducing network congestion and also increasing security. The network will be segmented according to group functions. For instance, the engineering department will have one segment, the call center will have another segment, operations will have another segment, and the marketing department will have another segment.…

This project used an Atmega644 microcontroller clocked at 20MHz in each of the two functional modules for processing. Memory storage is provided by a standard Secure Digital (SD) card. Xbee modules provide bidirectional wireless communication and we use the TLV5616 DAC chip for generating analog audio. The LM358 dual op amp provides active filtering to the output of the DAC. Music files can be added to the SD card using any computer with a multimedia card reader. Once the base station detects an SD card inserted into the holder, it awaits data requests from the portable module. The portable module requests data when required and feeds these values into the DAC. The DAC output is low-pass filtered by the op amp, which also buffers the DAC output before it reaches the audio output…

    W. bancrofti have two hosts for their life cycles; the definitive host being humans and their intermediate hosts being mosquitoes. When the parasite is an adult, it resides in the human’s lymphoids in the lower body of the human. The larvae in the first stage of the cycle, the microfilariae, are present in the human’s blood. The microfilariae have a sheath around them. This sheath, along with the area in which the worms reside, facilitates diagnosis of which species of microfilariae is in a patient. The microfilariae can be found mostly from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. the next day. They move throughout the circulation throughout the day. They are present in the deep veins diurnally, and they migrate to the peripheral circulation nocturnally.…

What is Filariasis, it’s a disease of tropical countries, is caused by types of parasitic worms called nematodes or more commonly known as round warm. They are parasites that are slender and threadlike, and they are tissue-dwelling worms. The worms are transmitted by mosquitoes and other biting insects, and can be easily spread by flies as they pass from person to person. Lymphatic filariasis is most common to develop in countries with a tropical climate. The larvae will enter the body when the mosquito bites you and then will travel to the lymphatic system, where they mature into adult worms. When the worms turn into adults and are inside your lymphatic system it can cause swelling and scarring of the legs, known as elephantiasis, it can also cause an obstruction of the lymphatic system generally occurs in the groin area leading to scrotal enlargement up to the size of a basketball. People can have different types of symptoms such as flu like symptoms, in some cases people go years without knowing they have this disease because it can take years for the swelling to start to occur and make people aware of it. When people develop elephantiasis is due to both the buildup of lymph fluid and the impaired ability of the lymph to fight infections, leaving affected people more susceptible to germs and bacteria. There are several ways you can treat this disease. The ways you can treat it will depend on how far it has progressed such as the drug Diethylcarbamazine that is used to treat the active infections. After elephantiasis has already developed there is no drug to treat it, it can be treated with therapy and hygiene measures to prevent more infection to set in. After hydrocele occurs you can have surgery to help relieve the pressure and the pain that is associated with it. There can be several complications that will arise if it is left untreated such as kidney damage, and swelling of the limbs. The size and weight of the affected body parts can lead to a…

The life cycle of filariasis begins with introduction of third-stage filarial larvae onto human skin by a mosquito during a blood meal; the larvae then migrate through the bite wound and enter local lymphatic vessels. Over a period of approximately nine months, these larvae develop into mature adult worms. Female Wuchereria worms measure 80 to 100 mm in length and 0.24 to 0.30 mm in diameter, and the males measure about 40 mm by 0.1 mm.…
