The hardest decision Nick had to make was to arrange for Daisy, his married cousin, to meet a long lost love of hers, Jay Gatsby. Nick was conflicted because Daisy is married and Gatsby has been participating in illegal activities and lying to everyone around him. Daisy is also married to Tom who is portrayed as ruthless. This decision could have negative consequences for Daisy,
Gatsby, and Nick. Despite all of this Tom stuck to his morals and concluded that Daises happiness was more important.
The other difficult decision he was faced with was if he should work illegally with Gatsby. Nick had not been making a lot of money in his career. Gatsby saw this and took it as an opportunity to offer for Nick to work illegally with him. Nick would gain a great deal of profit from this business agreement. Nick refused without hesitation even when offered a second time.
Even though Nick was faced with these decisions he still stuck to his morals and tried to make a decision that would be beneficial to all involved in his life. He showed courage in doing that. Fitzgerald uses Nick to symbolize the good that is still in the world at that time. He does this because we are faced with the troubled characters like Tom who is cheating on daisy and hitting his mistress and Gatsby who is lying and working illegally. This is why Fitzgerald portrays nick as courageous
