Abstract

In this paper the author will analyze how neuro processes affect behavior and impact the field of biological psychology. The author will also address the role of excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic potentials, synaptic transmission, and receptors in producing and regulatory behavior.

Biology is changed by psychology. The development of techniques which allow scientist to monitor the brain and it functions allows it to be possible to have a much clearer understanding of how the brain works. At a synapse, a neuron releases a chemical known as a neurotransmitter that excites or inhibits another cell (Kalat, 2004). Synapses can occur in one of three places: on dendrites, on the soma, and on other axons. It 's a form of communication between neurons. Low levels of serotonin are associated with illnesses such as bipolar, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive and depressive disorders. The brain is in need of creation or reabsorption process in order to function correctly. When serotonin fails to be absorbed back into the cells, the mood is greatly affected. Drugs called SSRI 's are often prescribed to influence the reabsorption of serotonin. Not unlike the effect of drugs on dopamine, drugs (such as LSD) can reverse the reuptake process of serotonin causing heightened mood and thought (Carlson, 2007). Many of the medications have side effects while taking the medication but usually will go away. The withdrawals can be a horrible experience when a person stops taking certain medications that is prescribed for these illnesses or disorders the side

    Serotonin has a range of influences on the neurological and physiological function of the body. It has a significant influence on sensitivity to pain, emotionality, and a behavioral response to positive and negative consequences. Serotonin, along with other major neurotransmitters, is also linked with psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia. Serotonin, or HT-5, also has an effect on sleep, eating patterns, and thermoregulation (Meyer et al., 2005). These seem to contribute to depressive symptoms in animals with depleted stores of 5-H. There are now 14 discernable types of serotonin receptor subtypes. Subtypes 2B, 2C, 4, and 6 have all been linked with depression and anxiety (Tohda et al., 2006). Recent research shows that altering 5-HT2CR mRNA to track the origin of depressive diseases may reveal conclusive information about the origin of neurochemical imbalances. (Tohda et al., 2006) There are different approaches to raise serotonin levels in the brain to normal levels. The most commonly prescribed antidepressants are classified as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs. SSRIs regulate the serotonin transporter, SERT, which slows the reuptake of the neurotransmitter into the presynpatic terminals. While new, more effective drugs with fewer side effects are being deliberated there have been newer ways to attempt to regulate serotonin imbalances. A recent discovery of small interfering RNA molecules may drastically change the treatment of depression and all other neurological diseases. Specially designed siRNA can be used to alter mRNA which will alter the translated protein. This process can be used to silence or increase the potency of its targeted protein (Thakker et al., 2006).…

    For one who may be interested in the neurophysiological or evolutionary theories of psychology, one need not look any further than Donald Olding Hebb who has been described as the father of neuropsychology and Robert C. Bolles who did most of his work in experimental psychology. Hebb is best known for his theory of Hebbian Learning which was introduced in his 1949 work: The Organization of Behavior. As far as his contributions to learning and cognition, his most important contribution was his conceptual demonstration that we could study higher cognitive processes by using single neurons and synapses as our fundamental tools (Olson & Hergenhahn, 2013). This theory was a first in that it differed from theories relying on stimulus-response bonds. Even today, it continues to be a profound influence in the neurosciences, as well as in computer research and neural networks. With all of his research concerning the nature of arousal, sensory deprivation, reinforcement, and fear, Hebb had an important influence on the study of motivation as well as the study of learning (Olson & Hergenhahn, 2013). The most important contribution that Bolles made is the insistence that proximate explanations must be considered simultaneously with ultimate explanations. Proximate explanations include “references to deprivation conditions, observable environmental stimuli, reinforcement contingencies, and the immediate learning history of the organism.” Ultimate explanations emphasize “traits and behaviors of organisms that have been shaped by natural selection” (Olson & Hergenhahn, 2013), This type of learning has helped bring us closer to a more complete understanding of learning that includes both non-humans and humans.…
