NATS Case study

WHO IS NATS?

NATS is a global air navigation provider. A 1962 organization which became a PPP in 1992 (Public/Private Partnership.

Mission: This is what a company actually does. It should be short and easy to memorize. However, it shouldn’t be so generic that you can’t tell what business it’s in. Note: similar businesses may have very similar mission statements. Why? Because they essentially do the same things.

For example
To promote and develop the growth of sports management in South African sports fraternity
To organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful (Google)

Vision: This is what a company wants to become. Vision is a seeing term. Therefore a vision statement should be future-oriented. It’s an image of what a company wants to create. It isn’t what a company is, it’s what it wants to become. While mission statements may be similar, vision statements should be very different. They should be motivating and inspiring. And they should drive decision-making.

For Example
Be the safest, most customer-focused and successful events company in the African Continent
To be the preeminent service provider of self-improvement resources that inspires and empowers individuals to lead the lives they most desire

NATS vision: “to be acknowledged as a global leader in innovative air traffic solutions and airport performance.”

In order to achieve its vision, NATS has established several key aims:

Continuous growth for the business both organic and inorganic with a view to achieving and sustaining turnover of over 1 billion Euro by 2015
Focus on reducing safety risk across the business
Engaging with and focusing on its customer needs, improving efficiency needs, reducing operating costs for airports
Increasing efficiency and effectiveness of internal operations
Reducing carbon emissions – a fuel saving of 22 million euros (Phenomenal)
