One of his greatest achievements was his supervision of the revision of French law into codes. The new law codes included some of the freedoms gained during the French revolution that included religious toleration and the abolition of serfdom. His victories included Italy in which he defeated Austrian armies attempting to restore the Bourbon monarchy. Napoleon was able to conquer most of Europe and change the map of the continent. The French empire was ruled by Napoleon and he established his family as the Kings of his territories.
In December 1805 Napoleon achieved one of his greatest military victories at the Battle of Austerlitz. His army defeated the Austrians and Russians which resulted in the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire. This victory also led to the creation of the Confederation of the Rhine which Napoleon organized in 1806.
One of Napoleon’s blunders was his continual pursuit for power. Napoleon’s quest to conquer Europe created enemies with Britain, Russia, Prussia, and others. Napoleon ended up retreating from Russia. Austria would have liked to negotiate peace however according to the textbook, “Napoleon might have negotiated a reasonable settlement had he been willing to make concessions had he been willing to make concessions that would have split his jealous opponents” (Kagan, Ozment, Turner, and Frank 598).
