NFL Persuasive Speech
Todays NFL is mostly built on violence. The most successful teams brutalize or intimidate their enemies. To the NFL teams it's all about being the strongest player on the field. Due to most players acting like this it can lead to fines, suspensions, or even kicked out of the league. I know some people are disagree by saying “It will ruin the fun in the game.”, but what is more important, safety or entertainment. What i'm going to show you are a few options that could change the safety of our favorite players lives. My first topic is about concussions. Did you know that from 2012 to 2016, there were over 1000 concussions in the nfl. That is over half of the players in the NFL. This could also be changed by changing the concussion protocol.

One rule that has been changed this season is when a player loses his helmet, the play is immediately whistled dead. And now during the field-goal the defense cannot position any player on the line directly across from the snapper, who is considered defenseless. While NFL is actually concerned of the players health risks there are other sports who don’t do much about the health risks. UFC is an american mixed martial arts sport. UFC allows kicks to the head. Being able to kick the opponent in the head is ridiculous. A fighter on the receiving end of a knockout has been concussed. A concussion will have a negative long term effect on a person’s health, yet we so often hear of a fighter being “okay” after being knocked out. The rules of this sport should be modified immediately because lives are at risk. It shouldn't matter if the “sprite” of the game is changed, the lives of the athlete matter…

Frontline’s League of Denial explains how the glorification of violence plays a role in head injuries in the NFL. The National Football League’s chronic brain injury rates are increasing very quickly, causing the league to increase protocol to provide better protection for the players. It is hard to find a football player today whose body hasn’t paid a very high price; the love of the game may be destroying the brains of NFL players.…

The NFL has been the subject of some scrutiny from the media and retired players in the past few years. They recently paid $765 million to former players and their families in a concussion lawsuit settlement. (NFL.com) "We now have a fund that is there for players and their families if they are having any issues. We also are going to baseline those players. If they develop neurocognitive issues, there will be a fund there for them." Said Commissioner Roger Goodell. (NFL.com) On top of making the fund for retired players the NFL has also implemented several new rules to help current players reduce the risk of injury. While these new rules are a start, these are only the beginning steps to further preventing serious injuries caused to players.…

Doctors proved that, “Recent studies have shown that head injuries sustained by NFL players can eventually lead to debilitating, chronic brain diseases such as dementia” (“NFL Head Injuries). This is a problem because the NFL isn’t doing enough to protect their players. Yes, the players do provide entertainment for everyone, but if the NFL keeps being careless many franchise players won’t be able to play. NFL players should be better protected by the NFL so players don’t develop brain disease, and won’t have to get sidelined during games due to concussions. Doctors researched and found out that, “A total of 87 out of 91 former NFL players have tested positive for the brain disease” (“FRONTLINE”). This shows that the NFL doesn’t protect their players enough. Only 4 former NFL players out of 91 weren’t diagnosed with concussions. The NFL needs to take better care of players so this doesn’t happen as often. Although brain diseases due to concussions are a tremendous problem, one thing that is much worse than that is a player's chances of getting another concussion. Once a player suffers their first concussions they are more likely to develop a concussion. “Studies show, after the first concussion, the athlete is four times more likely to suffer another” (“Concussions in Sports”). This is very important because as players get more and more concussions. Eventually they will develop permanent brain damage or they…

$53.4 Million the combined salary of the top 15 paid coaches in division 1 college football, $0 the combined salary of all student-athletes. Over the past few decades, college athletics have gained popularity across the United States. Whether it is football, basketball, or baseball, ever since the turn of the century, intercollegiate sports have brought in a surplus of revenue to their respective Universities. A recent study found that the University of Texas’ Athletic Program had the highest revenue of any other University at a little over $120 million. Yet with this large sum of money, NO college athletes are legally compensated for their work. According to NCAA rules, “You are not eligible for participation in a sport if you have ever: Taken pay or the promise of pay, for competing in that sport”. While it may seem odd and unjust to pay college athletes, the reality is that compensation of such athletes is a necessity not only to keep competition at a steady level in college athletics, but also to encourage students to graduate and get their college degrees.…

My brothers and I went to our friends house for a super bowl party. Instead of us taking an uber, we drove and while myself and my one brother were drinking more than my oldest brother, he still chose to have a total of 2 beers. If you drink alcohol while you eat, or after you eat, it won’t affect you nearly as much as if you were to drink it on an empty stomach. As you could imagine at the party there was food everywhere. It also takes about an hour for your liver to process one serving of alcohol. So over a four to five hour long super bowl, it is definitely safe to drive. Especially because he was drinking water as well. Why? Because he isn’t legally drunk. In the end my brother was able to enjoy his time and drive me home safely with no risk.…

Running is a mental sport, but sometimes you need someone to remind you to never stop pushing to the limits. A person who will always keep you on your toes. A person who always pushes student athletes to the limits is cross country coach Katie Weyer. “Dig down deep” she yells at practices or meets, or “find your next gear” as we sometimes fall into a sluggish pace. These quotes that Mrs. Weyer says linger into our minds throughout the entire race as motivation. They remind us that we are going to hurt, whether we go fast or slow. I always remember Mrs. Weyer saying “the faster you go, the faster it’s over” which is so true. I’ve learned that during that first mile your stomach is going to cramp up, legs feel wobbly, and the heat will make…
