My Educational Journey: From Cannot to Can
Aristotle once said, “The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.” Every person has experiences that influence their view of education. Every day we are influenced in one way or another. Whether it be by our parents, our family, our friends, our environment, or society. A significant event for me, which influenced my education, was the day that my parents told me they could not afford to send me to college. At home, I would have considered my life average, dare I even say mundane? When I was a small child in elementary school, we had very little. Not that we were homeless, but we were not considered middle class when I was a young child. We shopped at thrift stores, ate TV dinners, and lived in a trailer. The other kids teased me in school because of our financial status and I only had 2 true friends. As a student in high school, I was average, but I wanted to go to college so that I would be able to provide myself a more comfortable life than what my parents were able to provide for me.
During my senior year in high school, I remember applying to several different colleges. Excitement filled me when I received my acceptance letter to Fresno State University, but my mom did not share the same excitement with me. In fact, I do not believe there was any reaction from her. Financial aid paperwork was completed, however, upon receiving the results I was told that they were not willing to take out loans to pay for my education. Since I did not have the good grades to qualify for grants or scholarships, I could not go to college. That was it. The end. So much for my goal. Instead, I went to work. That one small statement, “We cannot pay for college” changed my life. The cost of in-state tuition in 1997 was approximately $7,000 a year. Comparatively, the cost of having me in the home could have been around that cost. Looking back on it, I wonder if

You made a great point when you mentioned that education is significant to one's success in life. This week reading assignment helped me to acquire knowledge about the conflicting functions of education. For instance, “function 1 socialization: assist in learning to be productive member of society through the passing on of culture” (Ballantine & Hammack, 2012, p. 29). For example, students may have “different experiences depending on their gender, social class, racial, or ethnic background” (Ballantine & Hammack, 2012, p. 29). For example, a student who is low income will receive a different type of education than a member of the upper class. I am excited to learn about the dilemmas that are presently faced and what we can do to create…

I always wanted to go to college growing up, but because of my family, along with my sisters and myself, were born and raised in a refugee camp in Nepal, I had a feeling that college was a dream that would not come true for me. In 2012, we came to Salt Lake City, Utah. The school I did was from 9th grade. After resettlement in the United States, my parents are still struggling to look after the educational future of me and my sisters. My family said if I could find a way to pay for college. I began to apply for many scholarships, which would help to fulfill my dream and desire.…

Growing up my mom has always encouraged my siblings and I to continue our education to as far as college. My mother never really got the chance to attend college because her family could not afford to put all their kids in school. She had seven siblings and an extra bill for school was not something her parents were able to afford. I consider myself really lucky to be alive in a time where there are so many opportunities to be able to afford college. If it were not for scholarships and financial aid, my mother’s story would be repeated once again. Through financial aid, the door for a college career is opened for me and I’m willing to enter it. My biggest motivator to push myself academically has been my…

Education can be taken in many different perspectives. Not having enough education can affect the rest of your life but also your future family. Many people have amazing opportunities to get degrees in some point of their lives, but they are not committed to achieve that goal or simply they don’t have enough money to pay for college. Some parents are against how the society deals with education while others agree and support their decisions. Parents can educate their children their own way, but it is also important to let the child have a chance in society. To let the child go to school and teach them the tools necessary to succeed and be able to fight for themselves when they are older. Which will give them the opportunity to compete for a job.…

According to Michelle Akers, “I think the challenge is, to take difficult and painful times and turn them into something beneficial, something that makes you grow.” Just like every human being, I have had my fair share of challenges to face. My parents were born and raised in Mexico. Being from the type of family both my parents had, education was not an option and no importance was taken toward it. They both dropped out of high school and began to work in factories to help their families with financial problems. They realized how hard it was to earn a living and to maintain a family without a proper education. When I was four years old and my sister was nine, my parents made the decision to send us to Brownsville, TX for a proper American education.…

I come from a family of six with only one parent who works as a painter. His income is just enough to pay for our food, bills, rent, and personal needs. Hence, I am aware that my parents won’t have enough to pay for my tuition or any expenses in college. Considering attending Houston Baptist University, a private college, I know it will be very expensive. For this reason I think about and stress over about how I will cover payments for college repeatedly. Out of all the reasons I wouldn’t be able to attend college, I don’t want money to be the reason why I won’t be able to pursue my degree.…

Tuition rates in America are becoming more and more expensive and unaffordable for the average student. Universities keep raising rates every year, leaving students without a choice but to pay for the education they have already started. Financial aid offices give students a number when they are accepted to school, and this number indicates how much of your tuition tab the state will pick up. However, this number is subject to change every year, erasing all stability in a student’s expectations for post-grad debt. Not only are students graduating with enormous debt, the majority are either left without jobs, or working minimum wage jobs and barley able to make ends meet. Somehow, expert opinion still says that college is worth the overwhelming price of admission, but I say, that may not always be the case.…

The prices of college tuition have increased yearly, and not much of an effort is put forth to try to lower the costs. For example, colleges in the state of Pennsylvania have a high tuition. Moravian College’s tuition is about $32,931, and after receipt of grants and scholarships for one year it will be $22,900. East Stroudsburg University’s tuition is about $6,240, and after receipt of grants and scholarships for one year it will be $12,500. I can barely afford Community College, and I know for a fact I wouldn’t be able to afford any of these colleges or universities either. In this essay, I will explain through facts and opinions, why the cost of college tuition should be lowered.…
