My Army Story Example
MY ARMY STORY
By SGT De La Roche

I joined the Army Reserve on 01 June 2006. With only a GED and no aspiration to go to college at the time, the Army was a last resort for me. I graduated basic training in August 2006 and AIT October 2006. When I reported to my reserve unit, I attended two drill weekends and decided I wanted to switch to Regular Army.

01 June 2007, exactly 1 year from my enlistment, I report to Fort Campbell, Kentucky as a Chemical Equipment Repairer (63J/91J). With no more real need for that MOS in the army anymore, I was cross trained at my unit to a Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic (63B/91B). I deployed for the first time to Baghdad, Iraq on 14 December 2007 to 02 March 2009 during the surge. While there I learned how to work on HMMWV’s, ASV’s, MRAP’s, LMTV/FMTV’s, and many other vehicle types. It was there I decided to reenlist for another 6 year of active service with the MOS reclassification option.

After returning from deployment, I report to another AIT as a MOS-T for the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Operator (15W) course on 07 September 2009 and completed the course 18 March 2010. From there I reported to Fort Hood, Texas, my hometown, and was assigned to the 3rd Amor Cavalry Regiment. 20 August 2010 I was deployment a second time to conduct flight surveillance over COS Kalsu, Iraq. There I accrued over 1000 hrs of flight time performing CIED, CIDF, Convoy surveillance and FOB security.
After returning from deployment, 13 August 2011, I stayed with my unit and was promoted to Sergeant on 01 March 2012. Shortly after I received orders to report to Fort Knox, Kentucky on assignment with 3rd IBCT 1ST ID on 13 June 2012 where my unit was preparing for another deployment, would have been my 3rd. Due to the brigade only needing a certain amount for the mission, myself and a few other platoon members stayed behind.

While on the Rear Detachment, the brigade was preparing to deactivate once our comrades returned from deployment so I decided

Have you ever been through a traumatic experience? How did you explain your feelings during it? Did you want the other person to feel the same way you did? A few years ago, a drunk driver ran a red light and crashed into my vehicle. Surviving the accident with no marks, bruises, or scrapes, I had no visible proof of what I had been through. But mentally, I was hysterical, frantic, and upset. My family did not understand my reason for being distraught since I had not sustained any injuries. Wanting them to understand what I had gone through and how I felt, I exaggerated and gave extra details in an attempt to prove that my experience was detrimental and distressing. Tim O’Brien, the author of the short story How to Tell a True War Story, used symbolism and polysyndeton to convey that people often exaggerate after experiencing something profound, emotional, or traumatic in order to communicate unthinkable sensations and feelings.…

My army career was right on track. I had been in the 3 years at this point, coming up on 4, and already had completed air assault school, been awarded my expert infantry badge, and had one 15 month deployment under my belt. I was assigned to the scout platoon sniper section and was waiting for a sniper school packet to get final approval from the company commander. I had been studying for the sergeant promotion board for months. I knew that study guide like the back of my hand, I knew whatever question I was asked by the Command Sergeant Major I would have an answer for. I went to the promotion board that morning and blew it out of the water. My dress uniform was perfect. No one was able to find a single deficiency. The Soldiers Creed and the…

It all started in the summer of 2012; July to be exact. For some reason, I decided that being a soldier in the U.S Army wasn't enough. I wanted to go above and beyond the expectations that others had set for me. When I first heard about being "airborne" it seemed so surreal. In basic training, we sang cadences about it but I never really knew what it was until I went through it.…

Graduating basic training and becoming a United States Army soldier is one of the greatest feelings in the world. Less than one percent of the population of the United States understands and knows exactly how it feels to reach this milestone in life. When I reached this point of my life I was full of a sense pride, relief, and accomplishment. I knew that I had just officially joined something much bigger than myself. The memory of my basic training graduation ceremony will forever be burned into my memory. The date was December 7th, 2012. This day was one of the toughest I had to endure.…

My story starts in Orlando, Florida as a young troubled 19 year old. Before I joined the army I was in a bit of trouble in school, at home, and even with the law. It even got to the point where I had my license suspended for 5 years for street racing. After appearing in front on a judge and getting this sentence I knew I had to do something to change my life around. This is when I met SSG Hernandez at the recruiting office. He was an airborne paratrooper that had been deployed with the 82nd airborne division. In my eyes he was the man, he was the only one in the office with a red beret and at that point I knew I wanted to get one. So as soon as I enlisted in the army, I also signed up to go to airborne school. There was only one problem, I was extremely afraid of heights. Without even thinking about it, I had just signed up to do one of the toughest experience in my life.…
