Music Concert
I went to the MDC Jazz Band & Jubilation Dance Ensemble. The conductor was Matt Bonelli and the dance coordinator was Michelle Grant Murray. The concert was held in the McCarthy Auditorium Room 6120 on Tuesday, October 28 2008. The concert started at 7:30 pm and ended at 8:40 pm. There were five jazz performances, and four dance performances happening mostly simultaneously.

The first piece "Wind Blues" had a very harsh sound and was hard to listen to, partly because it was very loud. The piece had a metered rhythm with the trumpet sounding the best, towards the end the piece became faster. The second work, "Archa," was very easy to hear. It had a slow tempo at the beginning, was metered, and reached crescendo at certain points. It mostly stayed at the same volume. The horn and trumpet had solos at the front, and it was longer than the first piece.

The third work was mostly a dance, with the piano playing. The piece had crescendo in the beginning, a harsh sound, and an unmetered rhythm. The harmony was polyphonic. The piano player and trumpet player begin playing at the end. The fourth work was called "Three More Foxes". This piece was highly syncopated, with a fast tempo and very easy to hear. The harmony was polyphonic, and it had accents at different levels. The piece is not an easy tune to hum to, it will suddenly get louder.

The 5th work was called "Snakes". The bassist was an anglo saxophone player. The piece was metered, loud and had an easy theme to recognize. It had a conjunct rhythm, and it become gradually louder. The last piece was called "Groovin Hard". It begins with forte dynamics to crescendo. It was polyphonic, metered with a conjunct background. Throughout the piece it changes dynamics, doesn't stay at one rhythm.

I really liked the trumpet and trombones solos the two performers played. I liked how they mixed in the dances with the jazz playing. Overall, the concert was more entertaining than I

For the first example, I went with my Scottish half and chose ‘Amazing Grace Bagpipes”. This video is of a company of bagpipers playing Amazing Grace at a funeral. The piece is played slowly (adagio). The dynamic level is initially moderately loud (mezzoforte), with the entire company playing three verses of the song. They end with a solo of just the first line, played softly (piano). The rhythm throughout the piece is slow (adagio). The theme is repeated three times, once per verse. The cadence is obvious, as the bagpipes pause at the end of each line, with a longer pause at the end of each verse. This version’s harmony reflects consonance, the tone is smooth and comforting. The texture is monophonic.…

    Unit 1 Music Analysis

The style is definitely jazz and throughout the song her pitch would change especially during the improvising. The timbre between piano and double bass was closely alike with the exceptions of the bridge were there was clear difference between the sounds (Fitzgerald). The melody was pretty constant throughout the duration of the song. Besides Fitzgerald’s song, Beethoven’s Sympony No. 9 Mvt. 4 was probably the most diverse of the pieces in Unit 1(Orchestra). From changes of loudness, tempo, and rhythm, there was always a point during the performance that caught someone’s attention. Around the start, the main theme was played by the double bass so softly that it could be missed and soon was followed by the oboes and violins to build up (Orchestra). The theme was the only part of the symphony that I knew well while the other parts were all new to me. The soloists and choir’s harmonies together ranged from a polyphonic to homophonic texture, and the choir’s imitation of stars twinkling was actually interesting to hear (Orchestra). It was a first for me to hear anyone try to imitate a movement through sound, and the choir did a good job of invoking that scene. Beethoven’s Symphony along with the other pieces were interesting to listen to, and though each different styles, they all had…

The first piece was Intègrales by Edgard Varèse (1883-1965). Edgard Victor Achille Charles Varèse was a French-born composer who spent the greater part of his career in the United States. He was innovator in 20th-century techniques of sound production. According to the www.allmusic.com, his concept of "organized sound" led to many experiments in form and texture. He was constantly on the lookout for new sound sources, and was one of the first to extensively explore percussion, electronics, and taped sounds. Intègrales was composed in 1925. I think this piece is very modern, and is a work for wind, brass, and percussion. I am not really enjoying this piece because it is a little noisy for me. The second piece is Coptic Light, and the composer…

The second piece was the Concerto for Trumpet, 1. allegro (sonata) originally by Joseph Haydn. The performer’s name was Jose Sanchez. This piece was performed with a piano accompaniment. The piano started with a nice tempo and then the trumpet followed the exact same rhythm as a response to the piano. It was like talking back to each other, like a conversation which was very enjoyable in my…

On the Lisgar CI senior music night, the four music ensembles performed their favourite pieces for an audience of parents and students. I attended to critique the performance of the Senior Jazz Band. The band, conducted by Mr. Arrigo, looked sharp as almost all members were wearing full black concert dress. They played three jazzy pieces, which were each different and fun in their own way, and they nailed each one.…

The first formal small jazz concert was held at the Maum Café on Sep. 25th, 2008. There were many music performances have held at the Maum Café but Zino Park, leader of the band, and manager of Maum Café agreed to arrange a formal jazz concert for the first time. The main theme of this concert was “Smooth Jazz with Zino Park at Maum”. Before the concert began, the band members introduced themselves to the audience. The names of players were:…

Before going to the jazz showcase I only had three previous experiences with live music and for the most part those experiences were not acoustic sessions but had more synthetic instruments. Due to this I was excited to go to this performance because it would be something that I had never experienced before. I had a pretty good idea of what the experience would be like since we talked about it in class and also because I have listened to jazz music in the past. Despite this there were still a few things that surprised me and made the experience an exciting one.…

This music was very relaxing and easy to listen to. It was interesting because I actually was sitting with friends who are not even in Music foundations this semester, and one of them is a violist and got called out by Dr. Kim for being an excellent viola player. My sister is a violin and viola player, so I have grown up going to orchestra concerts of hers, but it was amazing to hear high quality/professional musicians perform live. The emotion and feeling they put into their playing was spectacular and they each had their own way of expressing themselves in their playing. Somehow, this group of women is able to meld these emotions in harmony to make the smaller group even more entertaining than a large orchestra. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and was glad to have the opportunity to enjoy higher class music in the comfort of my own campus.…

On Friday April 30 at 8 pm, I attended the Spring Instrumental jazz concert at Yuba College. This was the first time I have been in the school auditorium. There was a count off and the music began with nearly a full house. The first song played was "Won't you be my neighbor" from Mister Rogers' neighborhood by Fred Rogers and Mike Tomato. I liked the intro it started with Ron Hake tapping on the symbols then the trumpets, and trombones cut in and the music begins. This song made me remember about the famous television show: Mister Rogers, which I sometimes watched as a child. There where two solos performed during this song, trombone and the saxophone. I liked the drumbeat through out this song because it was snappy and made you tap your foot. The bass notes and guitar riffs just sang together brilliantly.…

The music pace was upbeat and gentle, and was a continuous flow. This lasted throughout the entire performance. The dynamics of the band were setup to allow the sax to have the strongest, most powerful sound with the other instruments blending together at the same volume. The volume was varied at times though, with the instruments giving a strong, loud “jolt” of music to really give a full effect. The texture of the band was also varied, with there being a very heavy texture at times when all seven instruments were playing, to a very light texture, when just two were. The form of the texture tended to change when one instrument would play, and the rest would slowly blend in until all were playing. This was another technique that allowed all of the instruments to flow together without an abrupt stop or change in…

Finally, the band began to practice their last piece of music. They pulled out December Dance arranged by Boysen. Dr. Miedem had the band start at measure 43. For this piece, the percussion section had to readjust a lot. But, the band did not sit still. Dr. Miedem worked with the french horns until the percussion was ready. Once they were ready, I could hear why it took the percussion section some time to get ready. They had some cool percussion. Between the sandpaper blocks, bongos, triangle, and many more percussion instruments, I was focused on the percussion section trying to guess the instruments because they sound so cool.…

I was unable to attend either of the two symphony orchestra concerts this semester due to my busy schedule as a rugby player, however, I had attended a symphony orchestra concert last Fall semester with my girlfriend for her St. Josephs College music class at the Stony Brook University Staller Center. I was hesitant to use this experience as it was slightly over a year ago and I fear that I may have forgotten certain important details. I can still remember certain key elements from the concert and the impact it had upon myself. I have also spoken to another friend that recently attended a Stony Brook University symphony orchestra concert in order to stimulate any dormant and preconscious thoughts I may have had in my head of my own experience.…

The name of the concert that I attended was called “TCU Jazz Combos” and featured a variety of jazz compositions. This concert took place in the Pepsico Recital Hall on November 14, 2012 at 7:00 in the evening. The event was casual; however, I chose to wear khaki pants and a button down shirt because I was not certain as to what the dress code would be. The performers’ names and their respective instruments were Mike Korson- Saxophone, Garrett Wingfield- Saxophone, Luke Wingfield- Trumpet, Alex Neal- Guitar, Edo Frenkel- Piano, Will Gilstrap- Bass, Russell Wharton- Drums, and Tanner Webb- Trombone. During the concert they played various jazz compositions written by some of the very performers themselves. Several other pieces were more well known jazz compositions from internationally recognized artists. The concert itself was not very crowded, with pockets of individuals scattered throughout the audience. There was definitely interaction between the performers and the audience. I found this aspect of the jazz concert to be unique to other concerts. Jazz concerts are significantly less formal than classical orchestra concerts or even piano concerts in which applause is saved for the very end. In jazz concerts, after a solo it is considered appropriate to applaud, even during the middle of a piece. Having never attended a jazz concert before, I found this to be a wonderful learning experience.…
