Dairy Cow/Milk Production
Math 221 – Final Project October, 22, 2000 T. Lock

For the purposes of this paper, 50 Holstein dairy cows were chosen for study by assigning a number to each of the farmer’s cows, randomly selecting a starting point or number on the list of cows, and then selecting every 5th number as a member of the sample population. Relying on inferential statistics, these 50 cows were then used as quantitative data, representing a sample allowing us to draw conclusions about the entire population of dairy cows at the farmer’s dairy farm. The following is a listing of the lbs. of milk produced by each of the 50 cows.

The mean (or sum of data entries divided by number of entries) of 2270, is only very slightly larger than the median (the data at the middle of the sample), and the mode (the data entry that occurs with the greatest frequency) which are both the same at 2207. This represents a very slight affect by the outliers at the high and low ends of the data sample, indicating that the mean presents the most accurate description of the data set. (Larson & Farber, 2011. pgs. 66, 67, 68). [See Exhibit A]. The range of the data set, 3138, represents the difference between the cow that produces the minimum lbs. of milk per cow and the cow that produces the maximum lbs. of milk per month; which tell us that there is a large difference in the of lbs. of milk produced

Yes, Row Pottery Works, Inc. should purchase the new Kiln because it would help them in the future. Rowe Pottery Works, Inc. has experienced losses for two and a half years. RPW’s operations are the main source of its losses as stated in the case. Continued losses were still present even thou attempts were made to control costs. The company was also in the process of investing in a new Kiln that had hopes of improving the company. Before that decision was made, I had to calculate numbers in order to witness whether or not purchasing the Kiln would be a good idea. The liquidity of inventories is very important in terms of profitability. I would recommend RPW to invest in the new Kiln because in the long run, it would be beneficial to the company. Future strategies for cost controlling and capital budgeting and management is going to be critical for RPW’s operation considering its insufficient debt capacity. Even though the sales of the company remain strong, the fixed costs are too high. Attempts to reduce the fix costs should be the key to increase company…

Statistics is the second last strand of the Australian curriculum. It is paired with probability because of “the development that progressively links the two strands” (Australian Curriculum, 2016, para 5). In this area of mathematics I discovered the steps of statistical literacy skills (ABS, 2013, para 1). To confidently identify the statistical skills, I had to understand each step before moving onto the next. The steps were; ability to understand statistical concepts; ability to analyse, interpret and evaluate statistical information and finally, communicate statistical information and understandings. These new findings are explained in my WIKA (appendix k) for topic three. It explains how to correctly store the statistical data in the classroom such as using various graphs which relates to the situation.…

This paper will discuss the methods taught in Statistics this past semesters using what is being referred to as the M&M® project. Methods include random sampling, calculating random proportions, mean, standard deviations, creating histograms and identifying their shape such as bell, constructing confidence intervals for proportions and hypothesis testing of the samples. Each section of the M&M® project will demonstrate a lesson that was learned by applying the knowledge from the class to each separate part of the M&M project itself. The paper will conclude by discussing reasons why the results of the samples may have been different than anticipated.…

“On average about 10%; after having a calf, a cow produces milk for about 300 days. The highest daily milk production will occur at about eight weeks after calving and then the level of milk production per day gradually declines during the rest of the lactation period. Not all cows give the same amount of milk. Cows that produce the highest amounts of milk generally have about the same peak milk production per day as lower producing cows. However, the rate of decline in daily production of milk during the rest of lactation is slower in these high-producing cows (Barbano,…
