Methods of Data Input, Output, Storage and Speed

We all should know and understand that accuracy of data input is important. In today’s society we rely on data input by others in almost everything we do. Knowing how the most efficient way of inputting data can aid in daily functioning. You can be prepared for what a support person may ask and know in what format to provide the answer. By knowing this you may also be able to prevent fraud and other scams that can have an adverse effect on your daily life. This paper will explore a small sampling of input devices, some forms of output, and storage devices. The last part of this paper will examine what affects the speed of a computer. We have all heard or used the term ‘my computer is slow; it’s taking forever to process this request’. What is meant by those phrases? I will address four items of almost every modern computer in an effort to explain. When examining the input of data one finds many different ways or types of information that can be stored on a computer. But what are the best methods and why? Contained are five items one would use to input data into the computer. Printed Questionnaire; we fill these out in doctors’ offices, pharmacies, schools, and even the U.S Census uses this method of input. One of the quickest and most efficient methods would be using a pre-printed answer card that all one has to do is fill in the circle. When fed into a reader the system automatically tracks the responses and produces a report as dictated by the organizer. Another way is by having established questions and answers on the computer and all the user has to do is ’key’ in their answer. Once finished all the data is stored and the report can automatically be generated. Telephone Survey; most of us are very familiar with

Questionnaires are the most popular method of extracting information from people. They are usually conducted by post, telephone or in person, now commonly on the internet. Questionnaires are easy to administer and easy for respondents to deal with. They simplify the analysis of results, and can provide detailed information. A useful way of delivering a questionnaire is online. One way of doing this is to ask the public to fill in a questionnaire, which then enables them to register for access to a website. However, questionnaires are easy to 'cheat' on and a market research agency will ensure that 'control questions' has been built in to check that the questionnaire has been filed in in a suitable fashion.…

The objective of input design is to ensure the quality, accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of input data during its conversion from its original source into computer data, or entry into a computer application. Data can be entered into a computer application from either manual online input or by scheduled automated processing. Input controls will ensure that data is accurately processed through the application and that no data is added, lost, or altered during processing (Shu, unk). No matter how data enter and information system, the quality of the output is only as good as the quality of the input. There are several key input controls for an input design such as, data processing control, source document controls, validation controls, and user interface. Input control includes the necessary measures to ensure that input data is correct, complete, and secure (Rosenblatt, 2012).…

The basic components of all computer systems whether they are microcomputers or supercomputer all contain six basic building blocks: input, output, memory, arithmetic/logical unit, control unit and files. A computer system needs input devices for entering data into the computer for processing. The most common input devices are keyboards and mice. Input devices have now expanded to other methods such as voice input, magnetic ink character recognition (MICR), Optical character recognition (OCR), scanning bar code label, etc. The output devices are used to produce the results of the processing done by the computer. The most common output devices include computer screen or monitor, printer, or writing output on CD or DVD. Computer memory or main memory holds the program instructions and data. All data flows are to and from memory. Arithmetic and Logic Unit consist of incredibly small integrated circuits on a silicon chip. It is mainly responsible for arithmetic function of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division calculation, logical comparison and decision. Computer files storage devices sometimes called secondary or backing storage is used to store programs and data when they are not being used. Secondary storage is nonvolatile. File devices include hard disk drive, magnetic tape drives, flash drives, and CD or DVD. Control Unit provides the control that enables the computer to take advantage of the speed and capacity of its other components. It controls the sequence of instruction to be executed, controls the flow of data, interpret instructions, and it regulate timing of processor (Brown et al., 2012).…

The accuracy of data input into an information system is very important. Data is raw facts entered into an information system, which, when these facts are brought together to add value, becomes information. For example, an employer 's name, hours worked, and job title entered into a system becomes valuable information to a manager when it is pay day for the employer. If the data is not accurately entered into the system, the data becomes useless. There are different methods used for data input in different situations. A good method to use when requiring data input for printed questionnaires is by using a scanning device called an optical data reader which in turn uses optical mark recognition forms, which are also called mark sense forms. Using these forms for printed questionnaires enables accurate census taking by just scanning the forms. In this process, there is no room for human error and the results are accurate. In a situation such as taking a telephone survey, methods using voice recognition devices are used. This type of input device recognizes human speech, records, and converts the human voice into…

The best data input method for printed questionnaires would be Optical Data Readers. Optical Data Readers are a special type of scanning device to be used on documents. Optical Data Readers fall under two categories, optical mark recognition (OMR) and optical character recognition (OCR) (Stair, R., Reynolds, G., 2004). Printed questionnaires which, for instance, can be used for surveying groups of people regarding a particular subject can utilize OMR through the utilization of OMR paper refer to as "mark sense form". This special type of paper requires those completing the questionnaires to fill in boxes using pencils. From there, the readers can recognize their marks in response to the questions on the questionnaire in order to gather the needed information. Also, for more in-depth questionnaires, OCR readers, which reflect light to recognize various characters, can convert handwritten or typed documents into digital data by utilizing special software (Stair, R., Reynolds, G., 2004).…
