Mcdonaldization of Society
If you have ever had a meal in a restaurant (fast-food/formal dining), used an ATM in a bank, spent your vacation at an amusement park or simply browsed through a mall, you have been exposed to McDonaldization. McDonaldization is "the process by which the principles of the fast food restaurant are coming to dominate more and more sectors of America society as well as the rest of the world" (Ritzer, 1996, 1). Nearly every aspect of today 's society has been affected by McDonaldization including the restaurant business, education, work, healthcare, travel, leisure, dieting, politics and the family (Ritzer, 1996, 1).
One of the first functions of McDonaldization is efficiency. Efficiency means choosing the optimum means to a given end. In our society, people like to have things go as quickly and as smoothly as possible, but they do not want to find out the fastest way themselves. Instead, people like to have a system that has already been used and that they know works. Efficiency has its advantages for both consumers, who get what they want quickly and with little effort, and for workers, who can perform their tasks in a simple manner. The fast food industry is very streamlined, because hamburgers are the simplest food there is to make. Other foods also do not need a lot of ingredients, and they are simple to make and to eat. Most of the food is also prepared so one can eat it with their hands, thereby reducing the need for utensils such as hamburgers. In the process of McDonaldization, consumers are forced to do a good deal of work as well. They have to stand on line, carry their own food, and throw out the garbage. This is not as efficient for the consumer, but it saves time for the workers. Education, health care, and the work place are all becoming McDonaldalized in order to become more efficient. Efficiency in McDonaldization has streamlined many processes, simplified goods and services, and forces the consumer to do work as well.

    The “McDonaldization” of society, is what Ritzer believes to be the direction the country is moving in. In the text, Ritzer discussed the way a Mcdonald’s restaurant works, and how it relates to society today.     George Ritzer’s book The McDonaldization of Society is based on his theory and social criticism on rationalization of society as a whole through the growth and principles of McDonald’s fast-food model of business. The book begins with an introduction chapter that describes the background of McDonalds and outlines the different chapters of the book. Chapter Two gives a history of socioeconomic developments that lead up to the creation of McDonalds including theories of F.W. Taylor, Henry Ford and Max Weber, McDonalds in the present day, and what is predicted for the future of the McDonald system. The next four chapters break up the McDonaldization principles and how each one can be applied to society outside of McDonalds – big business, education and health care as a few examples. Efficiency is the first principle introduced. The chapter talks about how McDonald’s fast-food model encourages efficiency, similar to that of the assembly line developed by Henry Ford, in creating a fast-paced environment. The next chapter discusses calculability and how McDonalds emphasizes quantitative processes over qualitative products; everything must be measurable. Predictability is covered in the fifth chapter, which refers to the idea of gaining customer comfort in the stability of product offerings. The final principle chapter deals with control; particularly those of customer habits and employee work styles. The seventh chapter addresses the drawbacks and problems associated with having a McDonaldized society. Globalization is covered in Chapter 8 with a solid definition of globalization; the something/nothing principles and how the fast-food model has affected foreign societies. The last two chapters in the book discuss options and alternatives for dealing with living in a McDonaldized society and how Starbucks is now taking over the role as an international mega-chain influencer on society in comparison to McDonalds.…

    For this research project, I observed The University of Mississippi’s Student Union in Oxford, Mississippi on a rainy October afternoon. As I ran in from the harsh rain to the shelter of the Student union, I immediately hit by the greasy aroma of the food court. I could smell the fresh Chick-Fil-A waffle fries coming out of the bubbling peanut oil, the overbearing scent of fresh fajita steak sizzling on the grill at Qudoba, and the distinct smell of Panda Expresses fried rice. All of the smells hit my olfactory receptors like a firecracker to the face, and my stomach let out a small but every audible growl. As I tried to make my way through the rushing crowds of hungry college students I couldn’t help but wish I was Moses parting the Red Sea to the promise land, the sea being the never ending stream of students and the promise land being Chick-Fil-A. I then remember I was here on a mission; to watch how student and workers maneuver through the University’s largest cathedral of consumption. I got in the Chick-Fil-A line that had wait of well over fifty people and began to take mental notes. My first shocking observation was how many young Caucasian men who adorned with their specific fraternity letters on their shirts where in line; I looked around and could find every few minorities including woman. All these young men gave off a vibe of being antsy and apprehensive, whether this attitude was due to the stormy weather or want for food was unclear. They all starred mindlessly at their smartphones with vacant expressions as they got caught up on what happened on social media when they were in class, and some even impatiently tapped their foot as if that was going to speed up service.
