The New Belgium Brewing Company was founded in 1991 by Jeff Lebesch and his wife, Kim Jordan. The idea started from a trip to Belgium, a country that is known for its remarkable beer and its centuries old traditions of making it as well. The trip culminated by the making of the first batch of Fat Tire beer in the couple's basement. The name was chosen in honor of the bicycle trip Jeff had made to Belgium. Within years the homebrew was gaining a devoted customer base and enabled them to move out of the basement into a facility that promotes production on a larger scale. The couple outlined their idea for the new company on a hiking trip to the Rockies. These core values that were penned on that trip are still the core values that the multi-million dollar brewery sticks to this day.…

Bluegrass Brewing Company (BBC) is a nationally recognized, American craft beer company, whose mission is to create bold, unique beers, quality affordable food, and serve them both in a warm and comfortable, family friendly atmosphere. Founded in 1993, BBC is Louisville, Kentucky’s oldest micro brewing company, producing just over 2,000 barrels a year. ("Facebook: Bluegrass Brewing, 2012"). Although the company classifies itself as a microbrewery, the Brewers Association would actually classify BBC as a brewpub because they do not sell more than 75% of their beer offsite (Brewers Association, 2012). For the purpose of this paper, we will identify the industry that BBC competes in as the craft beer industry. According to the Brewer’s Association, the craft beer industry is divided into six market segments: microbrewery, brewpub, contract brewing…

The Boston Beer Company was founded in 1984 by a man named Jim Koch. Jim grew up in a family that had a long line of brewers in their history, including his grandfather Louis Koch, who was the original inventor of what became the Boston Lager recipe. Instead of pursuing the old family dream, or what was considered the family profession, he decided to go to college in hopes of becoming a management consultant but always keeping the beer industry in mind. Then finally, when it seemed like the perfect time to enter the beer market because of a lack of specialized or “better beers,” and after going door-to-door for several months with his partner Rhonda Kallman (who was the only other employee in the company at that time…
