Chapter 3: Cola Wars
Question #1: In the new Coke fiasco, how could Coca-Cola 's marketing research have been improved?
To determine how the marketing research could have been improved, let us first define the end result. Ultimately, consumers felt almost betrayed that Coca-Cola scratched their flagship product, Coke, for a newer, updated flavor. Coca-Cola 's marketing research showed that over half of the people who taste-tested the new flavor preferred it over Pepsi and the nearly 100 year old Coke flavor. Looking back, there were several areas in which Coca-Cola 's marketing research strategy was fatally flawed.
First, taste-testers were not made aware of the possibility that the existing Coke flavor would be replaced with the newer flavor. This could have been the million-dollar question for Coca-Cola executives: "How would you feel if we replaced the existing Coke flavor with this new flavoring?"
Second, the sample size who tested the new flavoring was simply too small. Taste-testing was geared more toward determining whether consumers preferred a sweeter taste instead of toward the actual flavoring used. When deciding whether or not to abandon a century old product whose number of customers reaches into the hundreds of millions, even 40,000 taste-testers cannot provide a representative sample.
Finally, in what seems to be the most glaring oversight of all, the research showed that only 55% of the taste-testers preferred the new flavor. This data is hardly convincing enough to scrap an existing product in favor of a new product. Assuming that there were 100,000,000 Coke drinkers in 1984, Coca-Cola essentially cut their market in half to 55,000,000 who would presumably prefer the new flavor. It hardly seems like rocket science that if only half of the taste-testers prefer a new flavoring, you should not replace the existing flavoring.

    For my taste test experiment I decided to do Starbucks vs. Dunkin’ Donuts. I am a bit of a coffee fanatic. I can always been seen with a Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts coffee in hand at least once a day. So for my experiment I decided to do my taste test experiment to compare to the two companies coffee brands. I went to Starbucks and got a Venti Caramel hot coffee with crème and then went and got a large Dunkin Donuts caramel hot coffee with crème. I decided that my sorority house is where I knew I could find plenty of willing people to participate in my blind taste test experiment. The first taste test I did was the triangle taste test. In this test I make 2 small cups of Starbucks coffee and 1 cup of small Dunkin Donuts coffee for them to try. Due to the fact that I am such a coffee fanatic I can tell the difference and figured that everyone else would be able to do that same. I was extremely surprised when several 3 of my 6 friends had chosen one DD and Starbucks coffee as being the same brand. Next, I did a paired comparison, where I put one drink in one cup and the other in the other cup. A majority actually preferred DD coffee to Starbucks. But the answers were all over the map when you asked them which coffee was which brand. Many people were unable to identify the difference between which was Starbucks and which was DD. One friend stated that she believed that Starbucks has a much bolder coffee taste compared to the more mild coffee taste of Dunkin Donuts. After doing the two Taste Test Experiments I have come to the conclusion that even thought people say that they only drink or prefer a certain brand, if you do a blind taste test they may not be able to identify the difference in the two competing brands.…

    As we all know, Coca-Cola and Pepsi have been rivals for centuries. While most people have their own preference on which cola they prefer, they have no idea what makes these two cola brands so similar yet so different. While both are similar in color and taste, the biggest difference between these two brands are their sugar level. Coca-Cola, the dominant coke brand, contains less sugar compared to that of Pepsi’s. Furthermore, these two world renowned colas are said to help regain energy because of its caffeine content. In addition, Pepsi has higher caffeine content and contains more calories compared to Coke. These two cola types carbonated drinks are slightly different in taste. Coca-Cola has a slight vanilla taste to it while Pepsi has a sort of citrusy taste to it. When poured into a glass, Coca-Cola produces more “fizz” even though it is much smoother when swallowed. On the other hand, Pepsi maintains its fizzy sensation when swallowed. Despite all these differences, most people can barely tell the difference between these two colas in a blind-folded taste test. There was an experiment conducted to test students’ preference on both colas. According to Woolfolk and her associates (185-186), most college student Coke drinkers prefer Pepsi in a test where Pepsi and Coke are labeled as S and L respectively. They have concluded that college students prefer the letter S compared to L. They had conducted an experiment where both cups S and L contained half Coke and half Pepsi. Regardless of the type of cola, the students preferred cola S over cola L in 85 percent of the cases. This has proved that students’ preference on their favorite cola did not result from the preference for different colas, but the preferences for certain letters. In conclusion, these two colas’ have differences so slight that most consumers cannot even tell.…
