Hofstede warned against directly applying American-made management theories without adapting them first (Kinicki & Kreitner, 2009). Leadership is a mode by which a person (leader) influences others (followers) to achieve a certain objective of an organization. A Leader is a person who influences others by applying his skills, knowledge and experience. Followers are the ones who listen to the leader, influenced by them, and follow their instructions. The key part in this process is influence. Influencing is the method followed by a leader to communicate their ideas, get acceptance of them, and motivate the followers to support and execute the ideas by change. “What are values?” Values are ideals that guide or qualify your personal conduct, interaction with others, and involvement in your career. They help you to distinguish right from wrong and inform you on how you can conduct your life in a meaningful and ethical way (Seneca College of Applied Arts & Technology, 2001). However, everyone’s values are different. Values are influenced by personal, social, and work experiences as well as one’s culture. They determine how one relates to others, face situations, behave in a professional environment, and/or how connected one feels to others they encounter with similar backgrounds. I believe a leader is someone who has the ability to influence, encourage, listen, and nurture. They are able to inspire, stimulate, persuade, shape, and have an effect on others. According to John C. Maxwell in his book Leadership 101 (Maxwell, 2002), “everyone is a leader because everyone influences someone. Not everyone will become a great leader, but everyone can become a better leader”. Maxwell states that “each of us influences at least 10,000 other people in our lifetime”. Maxwell challenges us by stating, “The question is not WHETHER you will influence someone, but HOW you will use your influence”.…
