In the fashion industry, anything from bold makeup and outgoing clothing that does not leave much to the imagination to shoes higher than the Rocky Mountains, is acceptable. On a warm summer evening on vacation at the beach, a pair of cheap Old Navy flipflops are essential to achieving the ultimate seaside look and comfort. For a glamorous night out on the town with the girls, a pair of shimmery Christian Louboutin heels with a short black cocktail dress sets the night on fire. Finally, for a lazy night in the house cuddling and watching romantic movies on Netflix, fuzzy pink house shoes keep his and her feet warm. Clothing is such an everyday necessity who really takes the time to think about the culture their new top is savagely borrowing from. A good example of the commercialisation of different cultural fashions can be seen in Figure 1, the fashion page from the local Nottingham lifestyle magazine FHP. It suggests that the key look for the summer is Tribal with ‘an abundance of African overtone', ‘Middle Eastern influences', and that ‘kaftans are an essential wardrobe piece'. Although this borrowing seems harmless enough, occasionally serious repercussions can arise when cultural fashion items are taken out of their original contexts and popularized in the west by fashion designers and the models wearing their ‘borrowed' concepts. The strong interest in all that is ethnic and exotic is at serious risk of obscuring cultural identities of the Eastern and African people, and in some cases it is already too late. Culture is all too often seen as a…

“Fashion does not simply consist of the clothes we pick out of our closets in the morning. That daily decision only constitutes the last step of a much larger process, one that involves federal trade agreements, foreign sweatshops, multi-billion-dollar businesses, celebrities on red carpets, and sophisticated advertising campaigns.” (History) Fashion starts off as raw fabric and raw materials. But even more important is the raw inspiration. Fashion designers see the big picture and put together everything from scratch. All fashion designers need to keep up with the latest trends from season to season. They also need to showcase those trends on the runway a season before they are produced for the public. Along the way, fashion provokes publicity that inundates men and women of all ages, constantly conveying cultural standards of beauty and generating new trends.…
