Love is a powerful force that drives one person to draw a deep affection towards another. When analyzed, the short story entitled "Love in L.A.," by Dagoberto Gilb, shows how one can see many reasons in seeing irony and even satire by the story's title. Through "Jake," the protagonist's definition of "love" is expressed in different fashions, none result in anything positive; He portrays being lazy, irresponsible, somewhat poor, and perhaps something of a con artist, looking for his freedom. Several essences reveal the main character’s true identity throughout the story: a love for image, self-conceit, and daydreaming.…
After reading the two short stories, Love in L.A by Dagoberto Gilb and What We Talk about When We Talk about Love by Raymond Carver, I have realized that a common feeling like ‘love’ can be painted into so many different pictures. Each one of these short stories is written by two different authors and sees ‘love’ at different angles. The character Jake in Love in L.A. has this vision of love that is more of a mockery. Then, Terri’s ex-husband in What We talk about When We Talk about Love has so much passion, but the kind of passion that can be interoperated as obsession. The lies and misconceptions of ‘love’ that Jake and Terri’s ex-husband display reveal that ‘love’ does not exist in a world filled with nothing but cruelty and evil actions.…
A definition essay on love strives to define it as an emotion felt and displayed by humans, animals, and all living beings in their own way. It is a topic that has been written about through the ages and has found its way into books on literature and religion. Love knows no bounds and language is never a barrier. Wars have been fought over it. People have been and are still influenced by the emotion of love. Some of the best literary works are based on love, and even movie makers bank on it to win over viewers and create a hit.…
This novella is on the surface a gripping thriller; but if you delve deeper into the metaphorical and allegorical meanings then you will find an entirely different story, unlike most other stories from that period.…
and I was unable to identify any of the nuanced literary elements interwoven within the short story (Fassler, 2013). However, after recovering the initial shock and rereading the story, I was able to appreciate how the style and tone of the third person narrator’s vivid descriptions of the characters’ clothing and word choice added contrast, context, and elements of irony to the story.…
What is love? Often enough, as a hormone-struck teenager, I am lectured on what love is not. According to my mother, father, grandmother, aunts, uncles, and every adult figure that has ever made a guest-star appearance in the long-winded romance novel that is my life, love is NOT the warm cuddly feeling I get when I see a cute boy at school. Love is NOT holding hands on the playground; is not caring an abnormal amount for a favorite pair of shoes. I feel as though a vast amount of time is spent describing the negative space of a person’s heart, and not long enough spent defining its shape. Although Pastor Ostrum follows suit with his anti-definition of what love is not, he definitely strikes a chord in my heart when he says that “love is not something we wait to have happen to us, but something we do.” Many might disagree, might argue that love is a two-way street; that in order to give we must first receive. However, in the novel “Until They Bring the Streetcars Back,” by Stanley Gordon West, Cal Gant demonstrates this principle of giving time and time again.…
A couple of days ago, I was watching a movie where an English teacher asks her students to discuss ‘what is love’. Majority of the class did not know how to respond. At first, I found this odd considering that love is a universally understood emotion that can be felt by most human beings. We express the emotion on a daily basis, whether it be towards our family, friends, or significant others. However, upon some introspection, I realized that it is difficult to come up with a solid definition for it because of its subjective nature. Love exists in many different forms and holds different meanings for different people.…

Love is defined as an intense feeling of deep affection. In Raymond Carver’s, “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love,” the idea of love is discussed from multiple points of view. When you think about love, your definition of love is vastly different from mine or anybody else's. Love is the most powerful emotion you can feel, thus your individual perception as to what love entails is personally fitted to you and nobody can tell you different.…

“Love is not all” by Edna St. Vincent Millay is a sonnet about love written in iambic pentameter, with traditional structure and follows traditional sonnet rules. It expresses the confusion and emotion of the poet in a way to give the reader the idea that he has suffered or is suffering. It also goes from speaking broadly about love, to making it more specific and then finally making it personal with the last line. After the first eight lines of the poem the speaker completely flips the way the poet feels about the theme. The poet used alliteration and repetition to further emphasize the theme.…
Love is beautiful...and terrible. Falling in love begins with the honeymoon stage: everything is perfect and happy. As time goes on, the relationship proceeds out of the butterflies-in-your-stomach type stage and into one that incorporates genuine feelings. In A Beautiful Terrible Thing Jen Waite, the author, recounts the unraveling of her “perfect” marriage of being the spouse to a psychopath. Opening the memoir with a heart shattering discovery of her husband’s, Marco, emails to a relator regarding an apartment for both him and his girlfriend all the while Jen is “holding our [their] three-week-old baby on my [her] lap”(Waite, 0). Throughout the story sketchy scenarios happen that lead Jen to believe Marco is cheating on her; however,…
A funny example of love in the story would be liesel and rudy. Rudy the little lover boy is always trying to impress liesel, she acts like she not though. all this “romance” between these two leads up to a really sad ending, but like death said before this isn't a happy book. what we should take away from this though is that it's ok to love and be loved, so many people loved Liesel and she loved them back.…
