Literacy Narrative: Who Are You As a Writer? Length: 3-5 pages + works cited page
Style: Open Form
First Draft due: Aug. 31
Final Draft due: Sept. 14
Format: MLA style as dictated by Style Manual [33b]

For this assignment, write an essay exploring the question of how you see yourself as a writer, what motivates you to write, what processes you use, etc. As an exploratory essay, the form will be rather “open” rather than “closed.” So rather than trying to structure the essay around a central thesis, organize it around the theme in question. This assignment may require you to think deeply about yourself and you may even discover new connections about yourself that you hadn't realized before. Remember to use vivid detail in your writing and avoid writing in generalities. Use specific events from your life and paint a picture of words for your reader to enjoy. Remember, if you find the essay boring, so will your reader! The essay should have an introduction that orients the reader to what you are going to tell them, rather than jumping right in. The body paragraphs should each have a topic sentence that supports your overall theme. The sentences in the paragraph should all relate back to this topic sentence. The essay should have organic unity and tell a the reader your story. Include a conclusion reflecting on your overall past experiences and how you see yourself as a writer in the future. In the essay you should cite 1-3 books that you have read. These books need to be listed on a works cited page at the end of your essay. See your Style Manual, section 33b for how to format this.

Use the following questions to help you write your essay. You don't necessarily have to answer all of them:
1. What are your earliest memories of learning to write? Of learning to read?
2. How were reading and writing viewed by your family and friends when you were growing up?
3. What role did reading play in your development as a writer? What kinds of texts were

I am not a professional reader, nor am I a professional writer. As a matter of fact, I don’t like writing at all, but then writing is a part of life. I was only 6 years old when I started to take an interest in reading and also started to learn how to read. My grandmother was a greater reader. She would read to me all the time and encourage me to read anything I could get my hands on. I would always see her with a book during her spare time.…

Toward the end of my first year at Hawthorn-the present, I started reading much thicker books; I love to read books. My favorite genre is fictional, but I like reading non-fictional, and occasionally, I like to read biographies. Sometimes I would imagine just being one of the characters in the books series that I’m reading now. Reading at an early age I think had an positive effect on me it…

Reading has always played an important role in the household in which I grew up. My parents played a vital role in my older brother and I first learning to read and write. While many days consisted of reading Dr. Seuss books, or memorizing short speeches for church during Easter and Christmas service this is where I built a love for reading. On the weekends my brother and I would lay around the living room and read comics as well as complete activities in the kids section of the newspaper placed in the weekly Saturday paper. This is the time where my parents read articles that centered on what was going on in our county and explained it to my brother and me. As a family we would discuss the article that was read and everyone gave one’s opinion through verbal or written…

Growing up I read almost everyday. Reading took me to places I never thought I would go. Of course that was before technology took over my life but I still manage to pick up a book every now and then.…

    My Literacy Narrative

I 've loved to read and write ever since I was taught my ABC 's for the first time. It 's been a huge part of my life in a lot of different aspects. I learned how to read when I was three years old because I went to a daycare where I was the youngest kid and the only one who couldn 't read. Reading and writing just stuck with me after that. After I started reading better than my older daycare-mates, school was ready for me to conquer. The school put me with older kids right away and I was in English class with 3rd graders when I was in kindergarten. It helped me out with making friends and I always got along with older kids better than my own classmates. Elementary school is my favorite time of my life so far, because of all of the little things I learned from school and the kids that were around me and I don 't think it would have been even close to how fun it was if it weren 't for me being able to read so young. My love for reading stayed with me through junior high and high school too. I started reading more historical and biographical books than adventure and story books as I got older. My favorite books went from the “Harry Potter” series to Albert Einstein and Abraham Lincoln biographies. Starting in high school too, I got more into writing than before. I would try writing stories when I was in 4th or 5th grade, but I could never write more than two pages without me changing the whole story because I didn 't think it was cool anymore. So, I never really thought much about writing until I enrolled in our school 's journalism and media literacy courses. This class was in charge of our school 's newspaper and designed our yearbooks and programs for school events. I ended up being an editor for the paper. My job watched over all of the sports stories and events around our school and was in charge of making sure the Sports portion of the paper was sleek and…

    Essay on Writing

I have learned a lot in my lifetime about reading and writing and without it today it would be almost impossible to get very far in life. I have become the writer I am today by mostly paying attention in school and learning at home how to read and write correctly without many mistakes. When you were at home as a child most children would have a bedtime story read to them at night or they would learn how to read the stories themselves. Most children when they are young learn to write as well to when they are learning how to write their ABCs or even learning how to spell out their names or plenty of other words. As a child you loved to be read to before you would go to bed. Some children had this opportunity and some did not. Most of the time children were read to by their parents or in some cases if parents were not home they were read to by babysitters or other relatives that were at home. This also occurs in the same situation with writing. When a child is at home he is taught by parents or even by some tutors. This also could occur in the school when children are being taught their ABCs and other spelling materials throughout elementary school. Throughout my life there are many great books to read and that I got the opportunity to read throughout my lifetime. One of my favorite books as a child in elementary school had to be “Charlotte’s Web” due to the fact that my favorite animal as a child was a pig. There were lots of other books I had read in middle school, but my favorite book in middle school was “Holes”. I loved this book so much because I thought it was one of the most interesting books I had read. I also loved the book because it had a great movie to go with it which became one of my favorite movies in middle school. I never read a lot of books in high school except the books I had to read in english class. The only book I had read on my own was the “Hunger Games”. I read this book mostly because I wanted to see how greatly the book and the movie…

I remember in elementary school I was reading and writing at an above average level. For some odd reason I just loved the idea of being able to write words into a book and have people read the words I wrote. Reading isn't the most fun thing in the world to do but to write is to create. Writing allows ideas to flow into any which way you please. As long as you can write you can take a story in any direction you feel.…

When I was young reading and writing was never really interesting to me. The thought of going home and sitting there reading books to fill my class reading log was awful. I even remember trying to forge my moms signature to try to get out of it. My parents took turns daily tying to teach me how to read, but it never worked. Since I finished kindergarten without knowing how to read, I was put into a summer reading program. Being illiterate was caused by my lack of desire, and I suffered from it in the future. Trying to learn to read day in and day out in a room as hot as a sauna was not making it any easier on me. After a tough summer of taking these reading classes I then learned how to read, enough to get my by for the time being. Little did I know literacy is something so active and diverse that it is constantly being influenced by different source materials and situations. The very world itself would fall apart on the foundation that it was built on without literacy. The turning point in my literacy skills came later on in my life through encouragment from my girlfriend and influence followed by the example set by my older brother Brian.…
