In 1803, the United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France. Jefferson asked Meriwether Lewis to explore the Northwest Territory. Jefferson told him to map out the area, gather natural resources, make contact with Natives (Befriend if possible), and find a waterway that went to the Pacific Ocean. Lewis recruited William Clark, to be an equal in command, and 40 men. The two leaders, both in the military (Lewis a Captain and Clark a Lieutenant) led these men through 800,000 square miles.…
Meriwether Lewis was born on August 18, 1774 in Ivy, Virginia. He was a soldier, and he helped quell the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794. Also during his time as a soldier, he was reassigned to the Chosen Rifle Company. It was led by William Clark himself. Because of this, Lewis and Clark were able to meet and develop a strong friendship. In 1801, Thomas Jefferson became president. Both Jefferson and Lewis knew each other for awhile. Jefferson knew that Lewis should be his private secretary. The deal was offered and accepted. In 1803, Jefferson sent Lewis and a group of men called the Corps of Discovery to explore the west. This is now known as Lewis and Clark’s Expedition. Jefferson wanted them to explore what was beyond the newly purchased…
In the two articles, “Into the Unknown” and “Lewis and Clark Revisited” by World Almanac have many similarities and differences. For example, these two article are similar because they both were along the Mississippi River. In addition, even though the reenactment was not shot in the exact location, the sites still looked identical. While there are some similarities, there are also many differences. For example, in “into the unknown” they traveled in a boat with oars while crossing waterways where in the reenactment they used a boat with a motor. Also, the first explorers covered themselves in bear grease to protect themselves from mosquitoes where in the reenactment they used rush pills. Finally, explorers first camped in camp wood Illinois…
Overall, the Lewis and Clark expedition that explored the Louisiana Territory was a great contribution to the U.S. Without all the new things they learned it would've taken longer to tame the land. Lewis and Clark helped pay the way for our…

Jefferson wanted Lewis to find out information about the people animals and plants.3 Lewis & Clark were born leaders both experienced in army forces, resourceful, intelligent, and adventurous.1 They started their expedition near St. Louis Missouri in May of 1804.3 Congress allocated 2,500 dollars for their expedition. They experienced different things on their journey and made new discoveries. They experienced dangerous weather, illness, injury and fatigue.3 During their journey through the Americas Lewis kept a journal of all their discoveries. They were opposite but were stronger together.1 The Mandan’s were North American Indians that provided with them supplies for their first…
They were all hunters and gatherers utilizing the time seasons and game for that time. White tail deer was hunted in the fall season. The rabbit had the largest season which started in the summer and extended to the early winter. The lake trout was plentiful during the spring and fall season, while fresh water mussles were only available…
One of the greatest American adventure stories started on February 28, 1803, when President Thomas Jefferson gained approval for his visionary project. This project was to explore the unknown West with a small expeditionary group. President Jefferson chose Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to head this expedition. Both Lewis and Clark had close ties to Jefferson. Meriwether Lewis was one of Jefferson's secretaries and William Clark was a close friend. The initial idea of the expedition was to include scientific inquiry, geographic mapping, and clearing the way for commerce, but the purchase of the Louisiana Territory, on April 30 1903, changed this purpose. The new mission focused more on diplomacy, which required the crew to communicate the transfer of sovereignty to every Indian tribe and foreign interest occupying the lands along the journey.…
Thomas Jefferson has just expanded the United States territory immensely. This purchase is known as the Louisiana Purchase, which is arguably the best decision in US history. With all the new land resulted in lots of unknown questions. Some of them were what does this land provide, what animals are out there, who can be found on this land? To answer some of these mysterious questions Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to go explore the Louisiana Purchase. One of their stops on their journey was at what now is known as Fort Mandan, in Bismarck, North Dakota. Here is where Lewis and Clark’s relationship with the Indians (Mandan Tribe) was crucial because their next stops have never been explored…
The Columbian Exchange changed the world in many different shapes and forms. The plants involved in the Columbian Exchange changed the culture and the economy of the New and Old Worlds. Many plants were discovered in the Americas, but the important crops were potatoes and corn. Potatoes became a staple in European diet. Potatoes are able to grow in thin soil, which was all of the European soil. Corn was very important to the diet of the Native Americans. It was better than wheat because of its ability to adapt to different climates and it also grew faster. Sugarcane came from the New World. Sugarcane was very successful under the plantation system. It shortly became the largest cash crop in history. Many animals transformed the grasslands and…
The expedition made very many friendships with the natives and only a few enemies on the trip. Unfortunately the expedition could not befriend the most important of the tribes because they did not have much to offer them. Lewis had spent weeks before the trip studying plants and many of the adventures kept journals on what they saw. The expedition did not find the water way they were looking for but did find out many other useful things about the western United States. The Lewis and Clark expedition played a very important role in the expanding of the United States.…
John Fire Lame Deer was a Sioux Indian tribal leader, medicine man, rodeo clown, and storyteller amongst other things. A selection from his autobiography Seeker Of Visions: The Life Of A Sioux Medicine Man titled “Talking to the Owls and Butterflies” is a short piece regarding nature and man’s relationship with it. The piece was intended to make an impression on white people in order to help salvage what is remaining in the environment. Lame Deer reprimands the “white world” for its negative outlook towards nature and the treatment of animals, he converses how man has changed and reshaped nature in order to make it more profitable. Stating that Caucasians have gone and altered animals in order to create profit through food, often eliminating species viewed as pests such as the coyote. Lame Deer argues that people do not know what life is; that white people have become less wild through the use of pre-packaged food and household products. He repeatedly states that death is spread through use of commercial products that ruin human odor and that reality has become a fear of many. Lame Deer’s main argument can be deciphered in several different ways, mainly focusing on lack of contact with nature.…
At the beginning of this essay what captured my attention was how the men were going to take such a small dog on the expedition to the Alaskan glaciers with them and how this dog would survive. John Muir and his crew began their journey in the fall of 1879. They were on a mission to explore the icy region of Southeastern Alaska. They began their adventure sailing week after week through long channels, numerous amounts of islands and mountains. They stopped to explore Sundum and Tahkoo fiords and their glaciers. They eventually made a discovery of water called “Taylor Bay” and that is where the crew decided to camp for the night near a large glacier.…
