Legion of Honor
Throughout different time periods and civilizations come many different types of art that would never be comparable to those of another time or place. There are also the pieces that come from a completely different time and place, but yet they can still be compared to one another. The Torso of a God (Egyptian, New Kingdom, Dynasty 18, last decade of the reign of Amenhotep III, Granodiorite, 1359-1349 B.C.) and the Statue of Asklepios (Greek, Hellenistic period, Pentelic Marble, 2nd century B.C.) are two sculptures made hundreds of years apart, yet they both display many similarities and show how art is constantly changing whilst keeping the same core ideas. The Torso of a God is a sculpture located at the Legion of Honor museum in San Francisco. The sculpture is of a pharaoh holding a staff in front of its chest with his left hand. In his right hand he is holding something that could possibly be a bell or a key, by his side. The piece looks as though it never had legs past the knees due to the stability that exists and the fact that it appears to be flat on the area it sits on. The head has broken off so that only the headpiece and beard can be seen and it is broken at an angle that the right shoulder is missing as well. The left arm is also missing except for the hand and shoulder. The back of the piece is flat as though the piece was originally located against a wall. This piece is about three feet tall and about two feet wide. The piece is smooth all over and even though certain areas are carved out, the piece still has a smooth glossy look. The statue is wearing some sort of skirt that covers the area from the hips all the way down to the bottom of the piece. It also looks like the God is wearing a bracelet on his right wrist as well as a necklace underneath the beard and headpiece. The skirt and headpiece are shown by many vertical lines next to one another with a border around them to show where they stop. Other than the left leg that is slightly stepping

As I was touring the Museum of Fine Arts this past Monday, I was drawn to the statue or sculpture of King Menkaura (Mycerinus) and his queen. For a moment, I was able to relate with Ben Stiller and how he felt in the movie Night at the Museum. I genuinely felt the textbook come alive and I was able to relate with the artwork since it was covered in class. (Figure 1-29) Although having encountered other artworks that were covered in class, for some reason this artwork resonated with me the most. However, when I started looking around I found a similar artwork that caught my eye even more. A greywacke sculpture from Giza known as the Triad of King Mycerinus and two Goddesses that dates back to the period of the Mycerinus Dynasty, 2548-2530 B.C. I would not have found this sculpture as interesting if it had not been placed next to the sculpture of King Mycerinus and one of his wives. The contrast between the two statues brought out the beautiful differences between them, that raised a lot of questions, but at the same time informed me of what may have been the purpose of such a statue to be sculpted.…

Artists are influenced by just about anything, especially by the works of other artists. Pieces of art from different time periods and or locations have many differences but are clearly interrelated with each other in some way, whether it is by their appearance and or meaning. Examples of this are two pieces of Egyptian art entitled Seated Scribe and Haremhab as a Scribe of the King. These sculptures may initially look the same, but while personally visiting Haremhab as a Scribe of the King, I realized just how different they truly are.…

The statue of Akhenaton from the Temple of Aton created between ca. 1353-1335 BCE, whose artist remains anonymous, and the statue of Laocoon and his Sons from Rome, created in the early first century CE by Athandoros, Hagesandros, and Polydoros are two masterfully sculpted pieces of art that come from two different walks of life. During the time of creation, the artists of both compositions were experimenting with new ideas and techniques to portray their subject matter more magnificently. In comparison these two pieces are extremely different in background, the formal qualities they possess, and their original function. The backgrounds of these art pieces are quite intriguing because of the many significant changes happening politically, religiously and economically when the statues were produced.…

Understanding backgrounds, time periods, and history of the sculptures are important when analyzing the works of art. Ramesses II is located at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology. “The statue was found at the Heracleopolis, Temple of Harsaphes, in Egypt “(Ramesses II). Archaeologists believe that the sculpture was made somewhere between 1897 and 1834 B.C during the time of the Middle Kingdom. The facial expression and body language illustrates his desire to be timeless. The sculpture is positioned in such a way that the body looks like it could stand the test of time. Made out of Quartzite stone, this sculpture is designed to preserve the Pharaoh’s power and immortality. The Pharaoh is seated with both hands and feet placed purposely close to his body to signify success, reign and power. “He sits upright in a tranquil manner reflecting power and kingship ”(Ramesses II). Every inch of his body is made to perfection. His proportions are impeccable and is represents that of a god. The face of Ramesses is much, like all of the other Ancient Egyptian rulers during this tie period. The face has no personal qualities. “The same characteristics appear on almost all of his statues: a receding forehead with prominent brows; thoughtful, slightly downcast eyes; an aquiline nose with a broad bridge and rounded tip and a narrow mouth “(Ramasses II). The statue of Ramesses II is rather similar to the statue of Khafra. Ramesses II is seated in the exact same position as Khafra. Their hands and feet are close to the body while their faces have no personal attributes that give them their own identity. Both Statues were made to…

from Egypt. The statue takes on the form of a lion head (but really looks more like a monkey) and the body of a human. The container is made of glazed ceramics and well-crafted with details of the lion’s mane. The lion has really humanistic eyes, nose, lips, and ears. In contrast to the previous object, this statue looks less noble in my opinion. As a statue of leonine feature it does not display the sort of intimidation a European leonine statue would display (in my opinion). This god displayed in the statue is also a “protective” god so it is put onto many personal belongings or furniture. The statue holds a cap of the container that is detachable so it could easily be refilled. The detachable container is an indication of the Egyptian’s knowledge of product design. The bottom human half of the statue displays fairly muscular indicating that there was a standard of beauty that expected males to be muscular and “manly”. The golden accessories the statue wears indicate that the owner of the container is of a status that can economically afford a more ornate accessory. In fact, having the contain made into something that’s more decorative, instead of utilitarian, says that the owner is decently well- off. The religious figure indicates that this culture is really religious, religious enough to have personal belongings made in the form of gods. When comparing this…
