In this article a twelve year old girl, Caroline, was dreaming to be a star athlete in high school and hoping to swim in college. That all turned around one winter morning when she was playing in a basketball game and fell to the floor screaming for help. Her leg was bent the opposite direction as if it was broke, when she made it to the hospital they diagnosed her with a dislocated patella. Caroline did not understand how it happened and why it had to happen to her, but she learned from many doctors that it was because of ligaments in her knee being too tight, other ligaments being too loose, and the fact that she had no groove in her knee for her patella to sit. She went through 6 weeks of physical therapy, she was hoping that after…

I stroll back up to the clubhouse. When I am next to the kiddie pool, I hear “ouch” followed by tears. I whip around and a toddler is on the pool deck with a bloody toe. When his mother comes to console him, I escort the sobbing toddler and his mother to the clubhouse. I grab the first aid kit and latex gloves. I first put on Neosporin, which makes the child cry a little more. He starts to calm down after I place a band-aid on him. His mother thanks me for my help.…
Dave's bed was an old army cot in the basement, and his clothes were torn and scruffy. When his mother allowed him the luxury of food, it was nothing more than spoiled scraps that even the dogs refused to eat. The outside world knew nothing of his living nightmare. He had nothing or no one to turn to, but his dreams kept him alive, these dreams of someone taking care of him, loving him and calling him their son. What happens when the only hero you have is your dad, and he leaves? What happens when your mother doesn’t even bother to feed you? What do you do when you have to wear the same ripped clothes everyday, when your brothers get new clothes? What would you do if your brothers were treated with care, and you were abused? What happens when the school nurse checks your body and see’s cuts, bruises, and bite marks? What are you suppose to tell her? What do you do when you can’t tell anyone what’s happening to you? What would you do in those situations? Would you tell someone? In Dave’s case, he couldn’t tell anyone. If he did, his mother would abuse him more than he was already abused. Those terrifying questions were part of one little boys threatening life. It ends with his heroic survivor experiences as he grew up.…

It has to take incredible courage to process a challenge like losing a limb in war. Stories abound from young men and women who stepped on a mine, or were ambushed, and their vehicle blown-up. For some, the moment is frozen in time and they cannot shed it. For others, they don't remember anything before waking up in the hospital without all their parts. To take in that realization, and then go on to perform as a star athlete is to this author, unimaginable. The incredible strength and perseverance to go on with life and then for some, to further demonstrate their zeal for life in their high level of participation in sports, is mind blowing.…

The Discus Thrower is a article on a man who is tan but not from the sun, has blue eyes, but blind and legless- the right leg missing from his mid thigh down, the left from just below the knee. He lives at the hospital in room 542, the room is very bland, there are no decorations, no flowers, and it only has the basic things the hospital provides. He doesn’t talk to anyone or more around; he nods his head few times, which shows that there is some intensity of pain occurring. When the doctor came he asked few questions, but didn’t answer the doctors question. When his bandage was unwrapped to be disinfected, the black scabs were being cut off, and a shard of the white bone came off, the whole time the man did not say anything. Before leaving…
