Learning Styles of Our Lives
We are faced with many different learning experiences. Some of these experiences have made a better impact than others. We can attribute this to our learning style. A person’s learning style is the method through which they gain information about their environment. Research is going on all over the world to help explain learning styles. To me, it is our responsibility to learn about these different learning styles so we can appeal to every type of learner in our world. Howard Gardner has elaborated on the concept of learning style through what he calls “multiple intelligence’s” (Gardner 3). Understanding this intelligence’s will help us to design our learning environment and curriculum in a way that will appeal to all people. We may even be able to curb negative behavior by reaching people in a different way. Learning styles can also help us to determine possible career paths so we can help to steer children in the right direction. Discovering our own learning styles can potentially maximize our own information processing and teaching techniques. Howard Gardner is a professor at Harvard who has studied the idea of intelligence in a way that links research and personal experience (Traub 1). He began speaking about “multiple intelligence’s” in 1983. Since then, he has won a Macarthur “genius” grant, he has written books, which have been translated into twenty languages, and he gives about seventy-five speeches a year (Truab 1). His ideas have been backed and popularized by many groups seeking to reform the current educational system. The idea is we know a child who scores well on tests is smart, but that doesn’t mean a child who does not score well is not getting the information or is incapable of getting it (Traub1). Gardner’s goal is to turn what we normally think of as intelligence into

    The concept of learning styles is well publicised, but there is little agreement on how they should be measured. Coffield, et. al. (2004) argue that much more significance should be placed on matching the presentation of the topic with the nature of the subject, such as providing appropriate learning method, strategies and content, even though it is important to recognise that learners do have differing learning styles. A view supported by Marzano (1998), who found that physical and visual demonstration of the topic had noticeable effects on learning outcomes, regardless of any attempt to target students’ learning styles. Merrill (2000) also promoted the idea that teaching strategies be determined in the first instance by the nature of the content or the goals of the course, and only then to focus on the preferences or learning styles of the students, which can then be used to streamline the strategy. Merrill also suggested that the students themselves are not only ignorant of their learning styles, but are also unlikely to adapt to learning in different ways.     The developing brain has been a ground breaking field of study in the past decade. Advances in physiological research give insight into how the brain learns throughout the different developmental stages. Educators previously measured intellectual ability through a single factor called the “G” factor.     A learning style is defined as an individual’s unique approach to learning based on their strengths, weaknesses, and preferences. Some people learn best when being taught in a hands on manner, others are visual learners who have a preference for seen and observed things, while some learn best from the spoken word, and what is called auditory learning. In 1983, Harvard professor and researcher, Howard Gardner, introduced a theory called the Multiple Intelligence Theory that proposed that all people are born with seven “intelligences”, which account for how a person is able to learn and use information.     In our study skills lesson this week we considered learning styles. We looked in particular at the honey and Mumford learning styles questionnaire to discover how it affects us in education. I have noticed that during group work i tend to discredit other people points quite quickly if i don’t agree. In this week lesson we had the chance to find out four different learning styles. First learning style is activists. These people tend to attempt the challenges of new experiences. They are enthusiastic and open mind people. They tend to act first and then consider the consequences afterwards. Another learning style is reflectors. These kind of learners are thoughtful people who like to consider all the possibilities observe and there analysing all available data before making a move. They tend to have a low profile but they are good listeners. Another category is theorists. These people are usual perfectionists. They tend to be detached, analytical and dedicated to rational objectivity. Whatever they do always step by step, logical way. The last and fourth of learning styles learned in class was pragmatist. These people learn if something works in good way and practically that is the best way for them eager to try out ideas and theories. They are very enthusiastic about trying new ideas. They like to act fast and confidently on ideas that attract them. All four learning styles have many advantages and possibilities for people want to succeed. It depends from people and which categories tend to. I tend to a pragmatist because i am very enthusiastic about searching for new ideas and try to make them work. Essentially i like making practical decisions and solve problems. One of the things i find great about honey and Mumford questionnaire is that you can look at what you don’t do so well and try to improve it. I am more than happy to be a pragmatist but i also like a few things on other categories. I prefer to work alone like theorists and i am a good listener like…

    It is evident that schools in the current society are filled with diversity whether it is culturally, ethnically or socially (Montgomery & Groat, 1998). All of these unique features can play a part in the type of learning style the child prefers. The personality and genetic makeup of the learner also affects the way in which they perceive and process information differently to other learners.
