The trade name Kybella is not what this drug was originally known as, up until the recent approval of the drug by the FDA it was called ATX-101 by its manufacturer Kythera Biopharmaceuticals (Global Data Point, 2015). These reactions included swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, and formations of small areas of firmness around the treatment area (States News Service, 2015). More severe and less common reactions could be oropharyngeal pain, mandibular nerve damage (resulting in facial asymmetry), and difficulty or painful swallowing. The percentages of adverse reactions reported were as follows: mild at 81%, moderate at 17.4%, and severe at 1.6% (Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, 2015). The percentage of severe adverse reactions seems small and I feel that if the procedure is done by a trained professional it can be completed with success and safety. The most severe of reactions are only a possibility if improper technique involving injection into incorrect locations results in the medication entering skin, nerve, or muscle. With the proper injection placement these adverse reactions are easily
