We Filipinos are now living in the modern world of 21st century, not just by literally living in that time but we Filipinos are also trying to follow the track of what the foreigners are doing or in other words, we always want to follow the new trend. We can clearly see the generation gap that made the world now and the past ten years is different. In the past ten years, the outside culture will take a long time to absorb in our country. It’s a different situation now, with everything at our fingertip, and the simple example would be in the entertainment industry. The latest fashion, style, music, film, movie and in a simple word, an entertainment will easily enter our country without hesitation and no boundaries. It has been recorded to our teleserye history that Philippine TV has been airing foreign series since late 1990’s. It seems like Filipinos really enjoyed the series from the different countries like Mexico, Japan, Taiwan, and most of all, in Korea. They gave a warm welcome and gave an overwhelming rating to those series that they aired. And they even tried to adopt some foreign stories to give Filipinos a different vibe of series that we get used to and to give our own version of that particular foreign series. February 18, 2014. Many Filipino avid fans of foreign series got shocked when the news stating that foreign series will be banned here in our country spreads through the radio stations, TV and even through the internet. And it was all because of Mabuhay Partylist Rep. Lito Atienza, who introduced a new number of bill, the House Bill No. 3839, limiting the airing of foreign telenovelas to non-primetime hours. Six to 10 p.m. is TV’s primetime. Mr. Lito Atienza said that this will help the Filipinos to support our own multimedia works. And many Filipino celebrities agreed to this new house bill. How come they won’t disagree, it will be their advantage because the Filipinos will only focus to their works. If Philippine directors and staffs really want the Filipinos to support their own works, they should view more the foreign works as their competitor and not as the threat to their works; they should produce stories that has more different vibe, an out of the box kind of story and will give a new taste to every Filipino. After this controversial kind of new house bill, there are some rumors spreading all over the internet. It is all about the banning of the KPOP or the music of Korean Pop here in our country. It really does sound so funny, because there are so many problems that are country is now facing, and they are focusing on a very minor problem, in fact, this shouldn’t be viewed as a problem because it helps to attract the tourism here in our country to some foreigners. The biggest factor of the KPOP scene that helps the tourism here in our country is by the concerts of Korean groups, by those concerts, it helps to show and prove to foreigners especially to Koreans that our country is trusted and safe to be a vacation spot. And in fact, Koreans are the No. 1 tourists in the Philippines. According to the Department of Tourism (DOT), 1.65 million tourists visited the Philippines from January to April last year, up by 10.12 percent compared to the same period last year. The most number of tourists came from South Korea with 406,595, or 24.65 percent of the total, and a growth of 23.08 percent. Why we Filipinos are so proud and have this over-filling joy when our own multimedia works, like movies, TV series, songs and even album are being acknowledged to other countries? And we Filipinos are being too greedy to not support the works of foreigners. We should learn to respect the give and take relationship of our country to other countries so that we can have

We had brought them our pop culture, sports, foods, and many other “American” ideas. Once these ideas established the Philippines had lost some of their roots. Losing their native dialects and such is just one of the many culture specific values that had diminished. This is why the Philippines is very similar to the United States and it had not taken long for them to change, only a few decades. The Philippines can now look at this culture change as beneficial and detrimental.…

The Manila Metropolitan Theater was once the core of cultural life in Manila before it was ruined by the World War II. It stood full of pride despite being roofless after all the assaults of the war beautiful on its own but less taken care of. It was “a building that rises on the wings of a song”.1 Way back 1920 our country despite being on the Far East already had a metropolitan capital yet it had no theater that is at level to it being a metropolis. Filipinos then at that time had heightened cultural awareness. The lack of a theater to the metropolis was ceased by Manila’s Mayor Earnshaw as he forms a committee to prepare the groundwork for the project on September 1928. On the 27th of December 1927 stocks for the theater were made available in order to raise funds for the construction. The construction pushed on the first quarter of 1930, on the 10th of December 1931, the theater was opened. The very modern…

Imagine tickets being sold out in only a matter of 10 minutes across the globe in major cities like L.A., N.Y, Paris, Tokyo, and Seoul. But just who could be selling out concerts like this? Is it Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift? Actually try none, of them, the artist who are selling out these concerts in major countries around the globe are actually part of a growing phenomenon called Kpop which is short for Korean pop. Now I know what your thinking there’s no way this could be true, oh but it is. Take for example South Korean rapper PSY, recently released a music video for his song called “Gangnam Style” this song and music video are completely in Korean, but it has generated 400,000,000 view on his official Youtube channel alone becoming the 4th most viewed video in Youtube history. Shocking right what’s even more shocking is that you can even hear this song being played on the radio right here in S.C. on popular stations such as B93.7 and Hot 98.1. Now it’s clear from seeing this that Kpop is now quickly becoming a very popular genre of music not only outside of it’s originator South, Korea but even here in the United States and other countries around the world.…

The Center's collection documents the diversity of American music. We take as our starting point the European and African origins of American culture, selecting items which document the music of our national vernacular culture. From the 18th to early 20th century music was disseminated largely in printed form: sheet music, songsters, broadsides, instrumental instruction books and song anthologies. After 1920 recorded sound gained dominance. The Center's collection reflects this change in the commodification of music.…

This paper compares the Philippines and the United States in multiple areas such as norms, values, beliefs, religion, economics, etc. The United States and the Philippines, compared from a sociological perspective, reveal fascinating similarities and differences. While English and Spanish are the most common languages in the U.S., Filipino and English are spoken in the Philippines along with eight major dialects. Filipino was declared the official language in a “compromise” in 1973, but English is still widely used for business and politics in the Philippines (Culture 1). It would seem that the presence of dialects would inject an element of diversity in the culture, slightly mitigating the influence of the mass media. It is a “mixed culture from the blending of foreign influences with native elements….some of the isolated tribes are the only people whose culture remains unadulterated by …influences” (Culture par. 1). They caution that although you can find traditional theatre, literature and love songs in the national language, visitors are more likely to witness “beauty contests, lurid soap operas, violent and sentimental Filipino movies, and local bands perfectly imitating Western pop tunes” (Culture par. 2). Balancing between two different cultures is very challenging.…

    Perception about Comics

    • 837 Words
    • 3 Pages

Filipino komiks are known to for featuring melodramatic soap operas targeting not the children but the adult readers. Filipino komiks would eventually be known for featuring melodramatic soap operas aimed not at children but at adult readers. This development presents a marked difference from the way American comics have been perceived. (although this perception has changed since the mid-1980s.) The komiks were intended for adults, but they were still considered as a low form of literature. Francisco Conching, Mars Ravelos, Alfredo Alcala and Nestor Redondo have yet to be recognized as “artists” by the mainstream critics. Interestingly enough, the komiks influenced by manga(Japanese Comics) and anime (Japanese Anime), are mostly being read by young people(teens and pre-teens) rather than adults. This changes in cultural influence has brought an impact in the Philippine Culture as expressed in komiks. Komiks is a product of media which was once successful in the market and can also be considered now as a tool for communication, entertainment and even in the field of education. The widespread acceptance of komiks as a distinct medium of Philippine culture signals is legitimacy. Filipinos really love comics, but sadly, most of us grew up believing that comics has nothing to give and just a cheap kind of entertainment. “Cheap entertainment” is a phrase often used in correlation with Philippine made comics even up to the present time.
