Analysis of Kony 2012
Purpose
On the Invisible Children website they state the ultimate goal of this film is: “To end the use of child soldiers in Joseph Kony’s rebel war and restore LRA-affected communities in central Africa to peace and prosperity.” Also in the film he states that another goal of the film is to raise awareness for this cause and make Joseph Kony famous. To do this he persuades viewers to buy an action kit or donate money to the cause. Then use the materials provided in said kit to inform others about Joseph Kony by putting up posters and wearing shirts and bracelets from the kit.
Audience
This call to arms is mostly aimed at the variety of ages of people on facebook, which is mostly 13 through 24. This is because it appeals to the feeling of wanting to make an impact on the rest of the world, which can be fulfilled through this project.
The video does this by appealing to their want to make a change in the world. One way they accomplish this is by using the upbeat, up lifting, and inspirational music that can be heard in the media today. This not only induces all the same emotions one would normally get from hearing this music, but also adds a sense of familiarity of what is the expected reaction.
Another way the video appeals to the audience is using visuals. He does this is by flashing pictures in the video of teens supporting the cause. This creates a bandwagon feel to the audience, creating a feeling that they need to be included in the cause also. In addition he uses bright colors such as red, blue, and white to promote the cause. This is brings to mind a campaign feeling that every American is familiar with every 4 years. This in turn presents false simplicity in the explanations that go along with said visuals. It also gives a sense of unity between both political parties that young generations might not know much of.
