Rangahala Kandyan Dance
On my holiday to Sri Lanka one of the must-do’s was to visit the Kandyan dance performance. It was a show where native people would dance the traditional Kandyan Dance. It is a dance form that originated in the area called Kandy but today it had been widespread to other parts of the countryIt was nice to be able to experience the Sri Lankan culture in this way.
The theatre is located in Kandy, one of the biggest cities of Sri Lanka. It was a relatively small theatre so we were lucky that there weren’t a lot of people. The entrance of the theatre and the venue didn’t feel welcoming because of the lack of decoration and certain facilities. Later the energetic and enthusiastic display by the group made up for that.
The decor wasn’t very impressive. It was just a few colored spotlights. However I adored the costumes the dancers were wearing. The detail on the costumes was exquisite. For example the little bells and ruffles. All of the men wore a decorative beaded net on their chest. I thought that it was very unique, I had never seen it before. This sort of a costume is called a Ves costume which are worn by the
Ves dance. (I will come back to that dance later.) They also wore a headdress which incorporated a metallic front which makes the dancer look taller than he is. Headgear is not worn by women because they believe that when they do they will get very sick or have bad luck.
The show started with the blowing of a conch shell. They call the shell a Hakgediya. It is a traditional welcome. We were introduced to the Orchestra which consisted out of five groups of traditional instruments. The drums playing the biggest part. The Kandyan Dance actually is traditionally performed to percussion only. The most common drum is the Geta Beraya. A smaller pair of cymbals knownas he Thalampota is used to keep the rhythm. Another pair of drums is a twin drum

In 2008, the movie “Slum dog Millionaire” inspired a new dance craze, quickly spreading across the globe. Due to the movies, popular hit song, “Jai Ho” and the famous choreographed dance shown in a memorable performance during the closing credits of the film, known as Bollywood dance, has exploded into dance studios, workout facilities, and films worldwide. For decades, the infusion of song and dance has been a vital element of the Indian and Hindu film industry. However, it still is a recognizable dance form, which is growing rapidly across the globe. Dance is vital aspect of the Hindu and Indian culture and has been for centuries. "Bollywood absorbs all of western dancing and combines it with popular Indian folk dances. In India, dance is done for every occasion -- when a child is born, when a name is given to the child, when the lady is pregnant, when somebody gets married -- children learn dance from when they are very young (Rauschert)”. Nevertheless, Bollywood dance takes inspiration from Indian folk and classical dances such as; Bharata natyam, Kathak and Bhangra blended with western contemporary and hip-hop.…

Over the past few months at Marymount, I have noticed my major flaw in dance is lack of awareness, both mentally and physically. In general, I need to break the habit of simply executing the “correct” movement. Instead, I need actively think about what am I am doing and why I am doing it. For this assignment, I was directed to watch Melissa. Watching her allowed me to find new ways to think about applying different movement concepts to my body. Although my current goals are related to my last ones, these new goals are much broader and encompass more ideas. My new goals for the rest of the semester are to enhance the articulation of my feet and be more present and energized in my dancing.…

a good dancer in my opinion is one who dances for the luv of it. to be good at anything one has to understand and appreciate a thing deeply. a dancer must feel every beat and move to it. he/she must dance to the music like a wave dancing upon the sea. the two should be one. dance is a visible translation of music. a good dancer must realize dis. n most importantly, they should know that it's not the mechanical perfection but the heart which matters in dance(: once u realize dis, confidence, rythm, beat, co-ordination will all come to you naturally. confidence...sense of rythym..flexibility 2 a certain extent,…
