K-T Boundary
“After years of research and scientific speculation, the answer came down to one possibility: space.” If there’s any one thing that without fail draws me into a speech, it would be references to the grandeur of space and physics. I will be talking about the speech my roommate gave on the K-T Boundary. This analysis will consist of the background of the speech, Toby’s behaviors, and the audience. Without context a speech is meaningless. The context includes the preexisting conditions and the content of the speech. Yesterday I asked my roommate, Toby Briggs, if he wanted to give a short speech on any topic he chose. He was beyond interested in giving a speech of his choosing. Verbally, he was mostly successful. His delivery only lacked proper volume a few times where he trailed off. Additionally, he kept me engaged with interesting phrases and varied tone of voice like in this quote: “It’s a life that’s not truly taken but forever evolving.” He also utilized repetition to help me remember the information like this: “Once again eighty percent of earths organisms were killed after the impact of the small meteorite.” Although he used filler words often, he avoided any major slips in his speech like in this quote: “The star explodes and destroys itself essentially ripping itself off and throwing itself everywhere, and creating new life out of its debris. Um and creating new stars and spreading elements across the whole entire universe. Um It’s a life that’s not truly taken but forever evolving.” Nonverbally, his tactics were especially strong. He conveyed his speech through movements, including counting on his fingers and motioning to show size. He kept me engaged by both pointing at me and taking steps closer to me and further from me at opportune moments. Although he said he felt nervous afterwards, I barely noticed through his speech. Interestingly, his attire was very casual, but absolutely appropriate for the setting. His biggest weakness nonverbally was fidgeting; he would crack his knuckles and put his hands in his
