Over 100 designs were submitted, and the World's Fair Committee selected the conception of a 300 meter open-lattice wrought iron tower. [5] The two chief engineers in Eiffel's company Emile Nouguier and Maurice Koechlin, had the idea for a very tall tower in June 1884. The design was a large pylon like tower with four columns of lattice work girders, separated at the base and coming together at the top, and joined to each other by more metal girders at regular intervals. On February 28, 1888, a year after the publication of Noli Me Tangere, and six months after his arrival in the Philippines, José Rizal sailed from Manila again, by "advice" of the government. The controversy over the Noli took its toll on Rizal. He soon found that he had to travel abroad once again to guarantee his intellectual and personal freedom.
