Jesuit High School Lacrosse Team
My experience last year on the Jesuit High School lacrosse team is a constant reminder that hard work really does pay off. I had decided to try out for the varsity team, and in doing so I would be the youngest player on the team if I made it. However, after a week of tryouts, I was demoted to the junior varsity team. At the time, I thought my chances of playing four years of varsity lacrosse were over; but I was sorely mistaken. After being cut from the varsity team, I decided to make the most of my junior varsity experience by working to be one of the team’s standout players. I ran every day and worked on my throwing and catching constantly.
When the first game of the season came around, I knew I was adequately prepared to perform to the best of my abilities. I finished the game with two goals and three

The end of the season approached, and I was one of the team leaders in both goals and assists; but one question still lingered in the back of my mind: Why was I cut from the varsity team?
As we entered the last week of practice, I wanted relish what I thought would be the last few moments of the season. The varsity head coach was present at the last day of practice, and I was surprised when he pulled me aside during a drill. He told me that he had noticed my success during the season, and he wanted me to join the varsity team; for the varsity team still had two weeks of practice left before the state tournament. I held in my excitement and accepted his offer.
Upon my arrival to my first varsity practice, I immediately noticed an increased amount of intensity and focus. I knew I would have to work even harder to keep up with the bigger and stronger players. After a week of varsity practice, however, I felt accepted on the team. The team had a solid week of practice, and we were prepared to take

I stood up and walked down the stairs to the court. The team and I went to the locker room like we always do at the end of the third quarter of the girl’s varsity game. Our opponent? The number one team in the state of Kansas, the Hanover Wildcats. With only two seniors, our team had a record that you don’t exactly brag about.…

As a freshman, I made the varsity volleyball team. With this position came a lot of responsibility and pressure. My teammates always looked at me as the “baby”, but they expected me to play at the same level as the seniors. I learned how to deal with difficult personalities and I learned how to commit myself to a team and a sport. I also learned that I was a role model to other teammates and young volleyball players. Just like the Pink Ranger, people looked up to me and I tried to lead by example throughout my volleyball career.…

I liked watching soccer, and the decision to join varsity soccer seemed healthy. Initially, I was not able to control the ball or to run quickly enough, so I did not get to play during the matches. There was no way I could talk my way into earning any playtime; therefore, I worked on improving myself. I stayed for ten minutes after practices to kick more balls, and I woke up before school start to run two miles. The minute when I was called to play at a match was an achievement. Throughout the season, I kept improving and earned more play time, while leading a happy and healthy life. At the end of the season, I received a surprising award for the “Most Improved Player,” which I did not take for granted. Playing soccer was pleasing thanks to…

When I decided to join cross country team my freshman year, I never envisioned myself being a part of what would become known as “the best team in Hammonton history.” Three years ago, I finished the season as one of the very worst on the team, with no expectations being placed on me for the future. Fast forward to one month ago, when I along with my fellow six varsity teammates lead Hammonton to its first Atlantic County Championship in school history. While much of my improvement can be attributed to my physical growth over the years, I would have never reached that level of success if I did not realize how important it is to maximize my effort in everything that I do. My success in Cross Country was not as much caused by my physical development, but more so by the evolution of my mentality.…

With this mindset, I focused my attention on making the basketball team my junior year. Every day, after marching band rehearsal, I would practice dribbling in my garage, rap or rock blaring through the speakers that had I set up. The weights that used to gather dust, rusting away in the corner, gained a new purpose as I performed a wide arrangement of exercises, ranging from curls to squats. The heated air, accompanied by the occasional breeze, and the concrete pavement was my…

As a freshman on varsity soccer, I set my expectations high for myself. That’s why I was so disappointed with my soccer abilities when I was benched several games. So, I made myself work over the winter and summer to have some playing time on varsity. Every Sunday, my parents would go wash clothes at the laundromat and I would cross the street to my local YMCA and practice outside by myself. No matter what the weather was I’d be out there. I would set up tires in front of the goal and shoot through them to work on my accuracy, for my both left and right foot and back up more and more every time I got it through. Eventually, when it started getting warmer more people started to go. I met many people through the game and I learned a variety…

Once the season was over and talk of club was present, my coach asked me what my plan for club was. I told him I was planning on trying out for the 18s team for Rimrock VBC. What he responded with shocked me; he asked me when my birthday was and told me I could possibly play for the 16s team. He was implying that I wouldn’t make the 18s team and that got under my skin. By the time of club tryouts, I was so bummed out from how my coach had treated me during school ball that I seriously considered never playing again. He had made me feel like I wasn’t a good enough player and was unworthy of playing on a higher team. Luckily a friend had convinced me to go to club tryouts and I ended up making that 18s team that my coach didn’t think I would make. It gave me such a boost to know that I proved him wrong. That thought of proving him wrong motivated me to push myself to get better throughout that club season. It ended up working and I became a way better player than I had ever been. That season had helped me improve my skills and even boost my confidence way up, partly because I had worked so hard but also because my club coach believed in me and pushed me to better myself instead of giving up on…

A new chapter began in my life on the first day of ninth grade. That day, I went to my first day of freshman football practice. Although I knew a little about the game, I had never played football before, so I was somewhat apprehensive about what might happen. The coaches guided us through a series of tests designed to place us into the appropriate positions, although most of the guys already knew where they would be playing. I did everything the best I could, and was soon assigned to Coach Green and the linemen. Through that year I never got to start a game, but the things that happened both on and off the field with the other players made me very interested in what would come in the future. The experiences of that year set the stage for my entrance into varsity high school football, an experience which would shape much of my life.…

It seemed that all my years of hard work had all come down to this moment. All those days that I would spend hours at the gym, making sure I had made all my shots and perfected every dribble move, not even bothering to take Sunday off because if I wanted to go somewhere with basketball, I would have to eat, sleep and breathe basketball. I refreshed the inbox of my email, and there it was, the decision that would make or break my basketball career. I had tried out for one of the most elite club basketball teams in Wisconsin, Oshkosh Flight 14’s team. I think I clicked on that email about five-hundred times in anticipation while it loaded. I skimmed the first sentence and my jaw dropped on my desk. The words were tattooed to my eyelids, I could…

My self-confidence had plummeted into an abyss. I needed to find a way to dig myself out of it. To compensate for not playing on the school team, I joined a soccer team outside of school at the local athletic complex. Through each practice and game, I slowly began to feel better and better about myself. And my soccer skills were also improving as well. Every time I stepped onto the field I thought to myself, “I belong here”. I was beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Though my confidence level was nowhere near the level it was prior to tryouts, thankfully it had increased. But the important thing I learned after I got cut was that nothing in life comes…

Not many things make you feel more bad than if someone you greatly respect says they are disappointed in you. I did not want that to happen to me so I knew there needed to be a change. Every two to three weeks, my coach would come to practice with a new story of how some sports figure, who had failed as a kid, became a great athlete. For example, Michael Jordan did not make his high school basketball team, but later became the best basketball player to ever live. He later went onto win six championships with the Chicago Bulls. One day coach pulled me aside from practice and asked me,”Have you ever started in any football game?” I replied,“No sir.” He later went on to tell me that I had tons of potential, and I had many chances to prove that I had what it takes to be a starter. Sometimes all a kid needs is a little of encouragement, and that is exactly what i needed. I knew I have had many chances before but I just didn’t give them my…
