Is Thor Industries Highly Centralized Or Decentralized?
Distinguish between line authority and staff authority is new concept for me. Authority is the right to perform a task or give orders to some one else. Line authority is the right to carry out tasks and give orders related to the organization’s primary purpose. Staff authority is the right to advise or assist those with line authority.
As a QA supervisor, I have staff authority. I instruct to stop production process if my team observed any quality related issues. Hold the finished product. Ask to rework or destroy. Last year I experienced a conflict with my team and plant manager. Try to overrule my staff authority. However I was able to manage the situation and find agreed solutions to quality issues. Thor industry is a combination of these. Functional structure is group of personal and other resources according to the type of they carry out. Geographic structure is the organization departmentalized according the location of customer served or good or service produced. Here Thor Company we can observed both functional & geographic structure. The company’s principal executive office is located in Elkhart, Indiana. The president and chief executive officer the activities of a company. Thor has 17 factories in different geographical regions.
At Keystone, there are 29 brands. Also they have separate factories, each with its own manager in charge of that brand. If individual location and brand consider it can be considered as product structure. a. You want to improve the quality of cabinet installation, and you would like to get ideas from supervisors at a division where the quality is very high.
Yes I would like to get ideas form the supervisors at the division where the quality is high. Not only that I would offer short-term hands on training opportunity to the supervisors and the leads in the division where the quality is high.
b. You want to cut the cost of electrical work by operating more efficiently—building the same number of RVs with fewer workers. You want the electrical team to accept responsibility for this challenge.
Yes, I will discuss with the electrical team as well as other team member. Explain the expectation or the challenge. Give responsibility to electrical team come up with new idea and take the challenge. I will provide required support (example: tools, equipment and training).
c. You like to camp, and based on an idea you heard from some campers in a park you visited, you want to try building RVs with a new feature: computer
