According to the World Health Organization, genetically modified food (GM food) are food derived from organisms whose genetic material has been modified in a way that does not occur naturally, such as through the introduction of a gene from a different organism. GM food, which stem mostly from plants, are genetically modified to develop a better yield by turning it resistant to plant diseases or tolerant to herbicides. The discovery of GM food has influenced the society in different ways and GM foods has become a game changer. This essay will explain the reasons why GM food is a game changer, the conditions at the time which made GM food possible for it to succeed and the reason why it has a long-lasting impact.
