The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional league for Twenty20 cricket championship in India. It was initiated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), headquartered in Mumbai,Maharashtra[3][4] and is supervised by BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla,[5] who serves as the league's Chairman and Commissioner. It is currently contested by nine teams, consisting of players from around the cricketing world.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has found itself in the middle of many conflicts with various cricket boards around the world as a result of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The main point of contention was that signed players should always be available to their country for international tours, even if it overlaps with the IPL season. To address this, the BCCI officially requested that the International Cricket Council (ICC) to institute a time period in the International Future Tours Program, solely for the IPL season.     Cricket today, as it has been said many times, is not what it used to be. Unfortunately many young West Indians know very little of what is once was and what it stood for, they take for granted the techniques and its origins. The level of West Indies cricket has been diluted due to the increase of tourism and fast paced games. However there are many West Indians who hold strong to the fact that cricket is part of our culture and heritage. This archipelago in the Americas has produced many fine cricketers throughout the years. The Caribbean is a unique multicultural and multiethnic region; the majority of the population was forced to migrate after the original inhabitants faced almost complete annihilation. The survivors were at no level to repopulate the Caribbean. As a result there was no previous pattern for the new comers to follow; they had to create their own. West Indians had to develop their own religion, food, politics, art and essentially their entire culture. Cricket was one such aspect, though not their own, over time they moulded and shaped it into what it is today. Cricket came to the West Indies via the English military that were deployed to defeat Napoleon’s west India project and to suppress uprisings, they played the game during their free time, which was relaxing and reminded them of home. The game was introduced as a means of portraying the high statute that was English. During the Victorian age the English empire was at its peak, it had expanded considerably and was proud of its successes, she deemed herself as superior in commerce, morals and race. At this time the only thing that was missing was cricket, Lord Harris, a colonial administrator saw cricket as a method of teaching discipline, loyalty and acceptance of decisions in order to consolidate the empire.…

Convergence of Cricket, and entertainment, one can describe this as cricket tournament, an entertainment event or a media spectacle! “Cricketainment” perhaps? The lines get blurred at times. If we are to go back few years, the idea was mooted for the first time in 2002. It was none other than Mr. Lalit Modi, scion of the KK BIRLA business family and empire who had a fixation and an inspiration of holding a cricket tournament in India. Inspiration came from the NBA league in US and also to some extent the club football leagues in the European continent. Here both the tournaments and the clubs are also a brand “property”, complete with media rights, merchandizing rights, sponsors, advertisers and a die-hard fan base worldwide. Until now, this has existed in the developed markets or countries (first world countries if you please). IPL is the first such an attempt to build a sports brand franchisee /property in South East Asia, based on one of the most popular sports in the region. To me, this creation is what Malcolm Gladwell calls the “tipping point” in the annals of cricket history worldwide. The effect of this will be felt throughout the cricketing world. It will inspire and create spin offs of similar products/brands, attract sponsors and advertisers, and on the whole it will change the economic contours of cricket and hopefully other sports as well. Is IPL a brand success? Or should we be more specific and determine whether this episode of the IPL is a success? Let’s examine this a little more closely. Any brand, by definition, should have an uncluttered, unique and relevant value proposition to its customers.
